The scale of animal life. Excellent reference book regarding the world's wildlife.

The scale of animal life. The world's largest living animals, baleen whales, can be up to 82ft (25m) long and weigh 132 tons. At the other end of the spectrum are microscopic organisms-rotifers and tardigrades (only . 5mm long)-and submicroscopic flies and beetles (about . mm long). These animals are so tiny that their weight is negligible. Short notes on the various species with longer notes regarding habitats, and an overall view of the animal species.

This book is well organized, so each animal is easy to find I find this disappointing, because it makes it harder to compare these species with their wild relatives.

This book is well organized, so each animal is easy to find. I found the information to be direct and easy to understand, so information was quick to sink in. I also enjoyed how every animal entry is accompanied by a well-taken color photo. I find this disappointing, because it makes it harder to compare these species with their wild relatives. Overall, the book was well organized, along with beautiful photos to make it even better!

Unrivaled in its breadth and visual impact, this unique guide sets out to. .Text entries are both edifying and brief. Animal anatomy, life cycles and the principles of classification are also explored. But for its heft, this book is almost impossible to put down.

best wildlife photography that I have ever seen. I have to say that I was so surprised at how crisp and clean the images were. However, I can say that I really liked the book even though I am not necessarily a big wild animal person

best wildlife photography that I have ever seen. I had not expected them to be of such good quality. I have seen wildlife books before that included photos but they were not as big nor near the quality. However, I can say that I really liked the book even though I am not necessarily a big wild animal person. The great pictures and the interesting facts about the species in the book do make it hard to put down though.

Animal anatomy, life-cycles and the principles of classification are also explored. This is followed by a superbly illustrated survey of world habitats, showing how animals have adapted to each environment and the threats that face both wildlife and plants today. The main part of the book, an up-to-date and comprehensive animal catalogue, looks in detail at each major group and provides absorbing profiles of over 2,000 individual species

With almost two million species identified to date and even more than that awaiting discovery animals are the most varied living things on the planet. For over a billion years they have adapted to the changing world around them.

I enjoy exploring any scientific or technical info topic that relates to or has to do with animals, I've often sought a single book, one that stands apart from all other texts, to serve as my main info reference and source of inspiration. For me, as I continue to explore the vast topics of zoology, natural history, and wildlife biology, Animals the definitive guide is exactly that.
The Definitive Guide to the World's Wildlife' is an ambitious and visually spectacular guide that will widen your understanding of the amazing animals with whom we share our planet. It is a reference book, a picture book, and a text of incomparable breadth. It contains a wealth of information about members of each major group of willdlife: mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fishes, and invertebrates. Descriptions for each animal group includes facts, photos, and special-interest topics. There is also a fantastic introductory section that examines the many topics that relate to animals and wildlife--habitats, classification, life cycles, behavior, anatomy, and much more.

As other reviewers have reported, this is an exceptional, comprehensive introduction to the animal kingdom. The organization according to taxonomy is very helpful, and the taxonomy used is a well-thought-out compromise in this time of terminological controversy and shifting opinion in systematics. The photography is gorgeous, and the text hits the important high points.

The only disappointment is the shoddy binding. As others have mentioned, this is a VERY big book, and it is made all the more weighty by the use of thick glossy paper that makes the graphics shine. Such a book requires a particularly "industrial strength" library binding. Sadly, the book is bound as though it were a coffee table book that need not stand up to much more than an occasional desultory browsing. I've had it in my classroom for less than a year, and the constant use it gets has already worn out the binding. Hence the 4 stars instead of 5.

Usually when I'm looking at books such as this at my local bookstore I'm very disappointed in that they feature lots of pretty pictures but are very skimpy on information content. But DK Publishing's "Animal" goes way beyond striking a happy median here, it really is one of the most beautiful and informative books of its kind that I've seen in years. Aside from the tons of striking photographs there is a lot of good basic zoological information as well. Early chapters cover such essential topics as anatomy, ecology, habitats, evolution, classification, etc and then dives into a very good general survey of the animal kingdom. Species accounts are short but informative and the various expert contributors do a decent job of selecting various representatives for each group being covered. Some of which I, as a biologist, have never even heard of. At the end of each group account there is also a list of critically endangered species from that particular taxa. The lay out for this book is very well done and easy to use, as are other books from the DK/Smithsonian line. Each animal class begins with an introductory life history summary for the group and then moves on to introduce various species within the various orders and families of the group in question. The information is brief but succinct and all easily at your fingertips.

Now, while this is an excellent encyclopedia there are a few minor quibbles that I have with it. Namely that the invertebrates get very short shrift in the book. Invertebrates represent the most diverse and abundant animal life on the planet yet they only get about 73 pages of coverage in a book that is over 600 pages long! In most books of this kind I find a similar bias towards the coverage of vertebrate life over that of the invertebrates so I'm not too suprised to see the same kind of treatment here. Another nit picky quibble I have is that it would have been nice to have seen a "suggested reading" list as well as more info on conservation efforts for various species and habitats. Still, I can't think of a better and more informative (as well as readable) encyclopedia out there and if you or someone in your family likes animals this is a must have addition to your reference library.

"Animal" is probably THE book to have if you want to have a reference to animal life on earth. Awesomely designed, stunningly photographed, meticulously organized, this book is an absolute treasure house. Visually it's unbelievably gorgeous; the design and organization are inspired; the photographs are breathtaking; it's easy to read and fun to browse through. It's hefty (over 8 pounds)and packed with references to most of the known animal genera on this planet. As beautiful as it is, this is no "coffee table" tome designed for show; "Animal" is an extremely valuable reference that will be used and explored over and over again... And at Amazon.com's price (...) it's the book bargain of the decade. This is one book you'll want to share with your family for generations to come.

I ordered this book on a whim after Amazon used it as one of the examples of their new feature that lets you look at pages of a book online before ordering it. It arrived today and I really am impressed. It's a large format, boxed, hardcover edition... It weighs a little over eight pounds.
This book is just amazing. DK have been making "pretty" books for a long time that haven't impressed me too much as far as the content goes, but this one shows that they are starting to get very good at it. The book looks quite comprehensive and the pictures are just gorgeous.
I'm probably going to order a few more copies as holiday gifts, since this looks like something that kids would love, and (all together now) it's educational!

Content of this book is extraordinary. Pages are glossy, with maps for the habitat of each animal shown with them. Photos or drawings are labeled with unique characteristics of each animal.
The only negative is damaged front and back lower-right corners which, despite a box for protection, earn just a 4-star rating.
