George Beals Schaller (born 1933) is a German-born American mammalogist, biologist, conservationist and author. Schaller is recognized by many as the world's preeminent field biologist, studying wildlife throughout Africa, Asia and South America. Born in Berlin, Schaller grew up in Germany, but moved to Missouri as a teen. He is vice president of Panthera Corporation and serves as chairman of their Cat Advisory Council.

He records his initial study and summary of the year he spent in the Congo.

George Schaller takes you with him as he goes to the Virunga Volcanoes to study the Gorillas. He takes a look at the gorillas, but with a more personal approach than with "The Mountain Gorilla". This was a refreshing look at the life of gorillas from his own perspective. I would recommend it to anyone with an interest in Gorillas. Great book about a man who camped out in the african wilderness for many months to observe gorillas. This book gives detailed accounts of his sightings and observations. It delves into the foods they eat, their nest-building habits, behavior, and more. It's a little slow at the beginning, but it gets more into gorillas as you continue reading.

Mr Schaller was a pioneer in the study of the mountain gorillas and this work recounts his studies undertaken in what was later known as Zaire in the early 1960 just prior to independence (and subsequent spiral into civil war and violence which has yet to see an end). His insights into gorilla behavior and his adventures into areas wholly unknown to West at the time are very entertaining. I especially enjoyed the very first chapter which provided a comprehensive overview of the history of the discovery of the gorilla by Westerners.
