"Close-up card magic is performed right under the noses of the spectators. It has an immediacy that cannot be duplicated by platform magic. Seasoned professionals agree there is no better way to learn how to handle an audience than when they are inches away." — Karl Fulves.Karl Fulves is one of the most popular and respected magic authorities writing today. In Self-Working Close-Up Card Magic he shows beginners how to perform 56 tried-and-true, crowd-pleasing tricks for the kind of small, close-up audiences that gather at parties and family get-togethers. The tricks are simple to master. The performer needs only a deck of cards and a few everyday objects like a coin or a rubber band. The kind of close-up performing these tricks require offers beginners the best possible way to learn how to engage and handle an audience.Among the tricks are "openers," which quickly get an audience's attention and set the stage for the rest of the act; memory tricks that make it appear the performer has an uncanny ability to memorize cards; gambling tricks that seem to give the performer an expert ability to control the cards in games of chance; and "gimmicked" cards that create eye-popping visual magic. Simple step-by-step instructions, accompanied by clear, carefully drawn illustrations, make these applause-winning tricks absolutely foolproof, requiring no long practice or dexterity to perform.
Reviews about Self-Working Close-Up Card Magic: 56 Foolproof Tricks (Dover Magic Books) (7):
Friert
Simple yet effective tricks that can modified to seemingly more complex illusions (ex: Dean's Box).

Anyone interested in magic will enjoy and learn a lot from this and any of the other Fulves books on magic published by Dover. With a little imagination and storytelling, simple thirty second tricks can become fifteen minute illusions. After all, magic is the secret AND the performance. The magician is the magic.

This book provides some great trick ideas. As with any magic book, it's easier to learn an affect and deliver it from watching a video as opposed to taking it from the printed page. However, there are enough nuggets in this book to make it worthwhile! I would recommend it for anyone looking to add to their list of self-working card tricks!

Any reference, by the author, that learning these tricks is piece of cake must be taken with a grain of salt. You must Practice!, Practice!, Practice! It won't happen overnight...........or week....or month. Before you sit down to "wow," your friends, be sure you can fool yourself. Sit in front of a mirror. Do the trick over and over until it becomes second nature. A gift of gab comes in very handy. Diversion is the name of the game.

Another great book for beginners, goes great with Gibson's "Professional Magic for Amateurs". Tricks guaranteed to break the ice at parties. : )

This is an old book, but still has a lot of good information. A good buy.

The tricks in here are definitely worth learning if you take the time to read the instructions a couple of times over. Could've been written a little more clearly, as the people buying this are most likely novice magicians at best...
Lots of fun tricks. The directions are clear and the tricks are easy to do.
