François-Bérenger Saunière (11 April 1852 – 22 January 1917) was a Roman Catholic priest in the French village of Rennes-le-Château, in the Aude region; officially from 1885 until he was transferred to another village in 1909 by his bishop, a nomination he declined; he subsequently resigned.

Sauniere simply listened. Clearly, the bishop was privy to parish records.

1:30 pm. MALONE AND STEPHANIE MADE THEIR WAY ACROSS THE CROWDED hamlet. Then came a new confessional, seven hundred francs, statuary and stations of the cross, all hewn in Toulouse by Giscard, thirty-two hundred francs. In 1898 a collecting trunk was added, four hundred francs. Then in 1900 a bas-relief of St. Mary Magdalen, quite elaborate I'm told, was placed before the altar. Sauniere simply listened.

Rennes le Chateau is a tiny village in the south of France with an incredibly rich history. Through documents, allegedly discovered by Berenger Sauniere, the assertion was fostered. As more confounding documents appeared in the Bibliotheque Nationale de France the whole enigma surrounding Rennes le Chateau expanded.

This book is an essential publication for anyone interested in the Rennes-le-Chateau mystery as it is has for the first time full color images of all the major artworks that Sauniere has placed inside the Mary Magdalene Church in Rennes-le-Chateau. These are all executed precisely according to his strict layout and design. It is thought that Sauniere included certain details or clues in his church decorations, that when identified and deciphered would lead to the source of his wealth, whether it be to any remaining treasure or to a secret of some kind. If so, then this book could prove to be a valuable resource in this endeavor. Perhaps you will notice something that everyone else has missed that will lead you to make your own discovery. Ben has also included a few graphic observations of his own to help you.

Hats off to Hammott for this excellent publication and the foresight to publish it.
I only wish it had been available when I began looking into the Rennes-le-Chateau mystery many years ago.

With a full A4 size pace depiction each of the church statues, Stations of the Cross, etc. all in full color, it really helps to pick out any clues the priest Berenger Sauniere embedded in the church decorations that may lead to the source of the priest's sudden wealth and any that remain.

The news in France at the moment is that a Visigoth hoard of treasure has been tracked down to a cave near to Rennes-le-Chateau. Some of the clues they followed were from Sauniere's Station of the Cross. Makes me wonder if they used this publication to help them.

There is not really much more to say except that if you are at all interested in the Rennes-le-Chateau Mystery, or fancy a go at trying to decipher the priest's clues yourself in the hope of finding his remaining treasure, Hammott's Rennes-le-Chateau Guide book 1 will be an invaluable assistance. Also buy his Rennes-le-Chateau Guide book 2 as well as it will give you an idea of the surrounding countryside and detailed images of Sauniere's domain.

Further clues can be found in Hammott's excellent book Lost Tomb of the Knights Templar - voted best non-fiction book in this genre, see my review - it also details how he deciphered some of the clues in Sauniere's church, although he has still yet to find the clues in the Stations of the Cross. If you hurry you might just beat him to it.

I am not into the Rennes-le-Chateau Mystery per se, but after being recommended Ben Hammott's nonfiction book Lost Tomb of the Knights Templar: Rennes-le-Chateau Secrets and Discoveries by a friend, I decided to delve a little deeper and so purchased some of the other publications Hammott had for sale on his website, and also the novel inspired by his discoveries, Beginnings: A Hunt for Treasure (Kindle) (The Tomb, the Temple, the Treasure) that I have almost finished and will post a review soon.
Ben's guide book 1 is full of amazing images that feature the decorations of the priest, l'abbe Sauniere in his small Rennes-le-Chateau church. Ben found clues hidden in these decorations, some of them he revealed in his Lost Tomb book, that led Ben to make his discoveries. Anyone researching the mystery would find this an invaluable aid, but for me, I just like the pictures.
