Sir Walter Raleigh (/ˈrɔːli, ˈræli, ˈrɑːli/; c. 1552 (or 1554) – 29 October 1618), also spelled Ralegh, was an English landed gentleman, writer, poet, soldier, politician, courtier, spy and explorer. He was cousin to Sir Richard Grenville and younger half-brother of Sir Humphrey Gilbert. He is also well known for popularising tobacco in England. Raleigh was one of the most notable figures of the Elizabethan era.
Raleigh was educated at the City of London School, Edinburgh Academy, University College London, and King's College, Cambridge. On the outbreak of World War I he turned to the war as his primary subject, as well as publishing works on major English authors.
Raleigh married Mary, only daughter of James Gifford of Edinburgh. Alexander Raleigh: Records of his Life, ed. Raleigh, who bore a wide reputation as an effective preacher, published several collected volumes of sermons and devotional works.
