I heard about this book when I was doing my own research into the origins of the war in Vietnam. Before the internet, it was almost impossible to acquire a copy so I delayed my thesis until it could be arranged by inter-library loan. I'm glad I waited. So impressed was I by Mr Rosie's account, I felt compelled to make contact with him directly. Erudite and gentlemanly, he recommended other works that helped me complete my work, which I believe still stands up as soundly argued. For anyone unfamiliar with the events in Vietnam between August through November 1945, this book is wonderful. Combined with Archimedes Patti's "Why Vietnam" interested students are provided with a reliable and accurate picture of the events that would cause so much pain in the following decades. I cannot recommend this work highly enough.

This book made a huge impression on me, since I read it in the early 1970's. The British held the Vietnamese down until the French returned to be imperialists over our anti-Japanese allies. Fool in England France, could not see the writing on the walls of history, nor did they have gratitude to the Vietnamese for helping us all fight the Japanese.
