Gran Granada, Spanish name and origin, went through a series of political, social, and economic forces as a Spanish colony. In 1819, it was able to become free of Spanish colonial rule and formed the Gran Colombia, Nueva Granada, Ecuador, and Venezuela. In 1821, Panama "joined" this union; in 1830, Gran Colombia disintegrated. Panama remained a province, from 1821-1903, with no less than 57 attempts to separate from Colombia.
