This 456 page book gives a detailed history of historical markers found throughout the state of Pennsylvania. "Since 1946, the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission has placed over 1,800 historical markers on the Commonwealth's streets, highways, and byways. These markers recognize significant people, places, and events in Pennsylvania's history, and together they have transformed the state's landscape into a living textbook. This guide offers a complete listing of all Pennsylvania markers installed through 1999. Listings include the location, dedication date, and full text of each marker. The guide is designed for easy use, with markers listed alphabetically within each of Pennsylvania's sixty-seven counties. Pennsylvania's historical markers recognize names familiar to everyone: Benjamin Franklin, Dwight Eisenhower, Marian Anderson, Rachel Carson, Andrew Carnegie, and Jimmy Stewart. Markers also commemorate people like Robert H. Jackson, the chief American prosecutor at the Nuremberg trials, Daniel Hale Williams, a pioneering heart surgeon, and Haym Salomon, one of the leading financiers of the American Revolution. Markers interpret important events like the Gettysburg Campaign and the Battle of Lake Erie, and they commemorate architectural landmarks like Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater. They recall tragedies and controversies like the accident at Three Mile Island and the Latimer Massacre. And they revive happier memories like those associated with American Bandstand or the first World Series. The history of Pennsylvania is vast and varied. Whenever you drive the highways, or stroll through your own neighborhood, take this book along as your guide. There is much to discover in the Keystone State."
