Ironically, the Hinckleys had no such fears. I held my breath until they gave the gunman's name  . They had never recognized the danger signs in John's "typical" childhood. I was afraid it was my so.

Excellent book describing John Hinckley Jr.'s lifestyle and odd behavior he exhibited before attempting to assassinate President Reagan. The book details how Hinckley descended into a world of delusion and how he took on characteristics of fictional characters because he was unable to find his own true identity, if one even existed. His fixation with actress Jodie Foster bolsters his parent's argument that he was indeed living in a fantasy world, unable to tell the difference between movie characters and fictional situations and the real world. Truly informative with many details about how the Hinckley family suffered enormously. The book also will make you review your own identity and how much the reader may also realize how fictional characters in movies or books influence all our lives. A must read. I recommend viewing the movie "Taxi Driver" to help put many of the books' details into perspective.

The book is organized as a series of alternating chapters. with each parent taking turns writing of the couple's experience with their son and his descent into mental illness. The story begins with the assassination and the nightmare that the couple experienced as they learned what happened and what their son had done.

The book then alternates between the missing pieces of John Hinckley's childhood/adolescence and proceeding through the legal maze that eventually led to the trial and the surprising acquittal a year after the assassination. We learn much of Hinckley's life and the characteristics that might serve as warning signs in future cases. We get an idea of what mental illness sufferers experience.

In addition to the now well-known facts about Hinckley's obsession with Jodie Foster and "Taxi Driver," Hinckley was a John Lennon fanatic that spent hours at the site of Lennon's murder in the weeks following Lennon's death.

Even as he languished in prison for over a year awaiting trial, he demonstrated the unique ability to hear only what he wanted to hear. He expected to be released on bail. He looked forward to Jodie Foster's deposition and was angered/surprised when Foster was cold to him at their only face-to-face meeting. He refused to understand why he should not be immediately released following his acquittal.

The book is well-written and hard to put down. The story is disturbing, but probably helpful to those with mental illness in the family.

The only drawback appears to be with some of the history. The authors' expression of ignorance of Jodie Foster's existence and identity prior to the assassination is not credible. The authors' adoption of some of the gun-control positions of the victims is also not credible - especially where they professed to speak on behalf of John Hinckley, Jr. I suspect that some of the narrative was influenced by then-pending civil actions.

This is a very thought-provoking and insightful book by JH's parents who were so naive about mental illness. Sadly, so was our society at the time.

Months before Jr. attempted to kill Regan, the parents sent him to a psychiatrist for an evaluation ... only to be told by his psychiatrist that their son was simply "very immature". .. had the psychiatrist adequately diagnosed John Jr., there probably never would have been shots in Washington DC that fateful day in 1981.

the book is also a "wake up" call about Americans' fear and understanding of mental illness.

I grew up w John Jr. from elementary school through high school and remember his sister being in our house. When he attempted to kill Regan, I felt "scared to death" bc mental illness had been so close and prevalent in my world unbeknowst to me. I understood their socio-economic world.

The book taught me about mental illness and the fears and confusion those who have it experience. ... The book is a worthwhile read.
