American Pageant is the best US textbook we've used with secondary school students; the fact that it's in two paperback volumes is very considerate for the students. The book covers a plethora of our nation's historical topics and is very well written. I do not believe this book is used anymore in public schools.

Pros: Our high school uses this 13th edition for AP US History. It is a solid book for this class! It provides expected content, sometimes with a little opinion interspersed. I find this good at the AP level to facilitate some dialogue in that direction. I would not use it outside of AP US history at the high school level for various reasons, but for AP US history it gets the job done well for students focused on their College Board AP U.S. history exam.

Cons: The main drawback is the utter lack of multimedia and electronic online resources to facilitate its use in a digital age. I have heard their excuse a number of times: this is an AP oriented book, you don't get those sorts of resources for these sorts of books/classes, etc. Frankly, that is a cop out, particularly at the price point of this book. This leads me to the second drawback: its price. A new book goes for $110.00, and the used version goes for anything between $40-80. I think this price could be significantly less given it is a nearly decade or more old rehash of the same book, it is a book used at a high school level, and it provides no supplemental and digital resource options that normal non-AP books provide at cheaper costs.

I used this book in high school and my high school history teacher had given me a copy to keep. I had it for a number of years. After a move I misplaced it and was very happy to find this copy on Amazon. The book covers a plethora of our nation's historical topics and is very well written. I do not believe this book is used anymore in public schools. If you are a history buff, this is worth picking up.

Trying to save some money on school books, my teacher said these were fine (older edition that what was called for) contained basically the same information as the newer version.

I must admit that I'm not much of a history fan, but I found this book to be surprisingly good. The strength of this book is that the text is surprisingly readable. The prose flows well, and the authors often throw in historically unimportant, but nonetheless interesting, tidbits, facts, and (often very subtle) puns that make reading this book less of a chore. These "Baileyisms" drastically improve the reading experience. Instead of highlighting important parts of the text and taking detailed notes (as I would typically do), I opted to sit in a comfortable chair and read the text like I would any good book. The random tidbits and puns helped me remember and recall the information, which saved me hours of studying.

The book covers all the content it needs to in a very organized manner. The chapters are approximately equal (and manageable) in length and they are organized in a way that makes sense.

This book was more than adequate for an AP US History class.

got it for a class I am taking this summer

This book was required for my history class and although I am not big on history the book was really easy to read and had a good flow to it. Most textbooks I have to really force myself to read and that was not the case with this one.

For me, history books have always been a neccesary evil. They are over-simplified, wishy-washy, and read with simple, boring prose. Not this one. This one has done the unthinkable. Not only does it clearly show both sides of an issue, but it is shockingly well written. Almost every page or so one can find delightful little phrases that make assigned reading much more bearable. This is truly a gem.
Thanks
