Theodore Isaac Rubin, a psychoanalyst and writer whose short novel Lisa and David, about two teenagers finding love at a therapeutic school, was made into an Academy Award-nominated movie, and who became the public face of psychotherapy in postwar American popular culture, died on Saturday at a hospice in Manhattan. He added to the psychoanalytic literature in 1975 with his book Compassion and Self-Hate. For many analysts, self-hatred was a concept centered on the loathing, put-downs and recriminations people turn on themselves.

Free yourself from destructive behavior

Many of us know that self-destructive patterns are rooted in self-dislike, but few of us understand how to break them. In this wise and compassionate book, bestselling author and eminent psychiatrist Theodore Rubin shows us realistic ways to break these negative mental and emotional attitudes and build a strong sense of well-being and self-understanding.

Dr. Rubin looks of how self-hate begins, is sustained, and eventually leads to destructive and defeating behavior -- from alcoholism and drug dependency to perfectionism and fear of failure (or success). Offering practical and reassuring advice, he shows that the key to freeing yourself from these restricting emotions and habits is to find and examine the self-hate that generates them, and then to release your innate and powerful capacity for compassion.

This warm, sympathetic, and ultimately practical guide to personal growth and fulfillment is timelier and more helpful than ever.

Make sure you're seeing a therapist while reading this book. So many emotions will be realized and you will want answers and reassurance to let you know that you need to keep on going to get to the other side of self-hate.

I never realized how mixed up MY Perceptions of Myself were, til I read this book.

"Compassion and Self-Hate" not only clears these Mixed Up Perceptions, it also tells you where these False Perceptions come from!

This book has helped me get IN-TUNE with Myself and become an Independent Thinker.
No longer am I influenced by the Majority.

If you want to become Your Own Best Friend, I recommend this book.

This review probably will only help those who have read this masterpiece of a book already and want more info on how to use it.

I have seen reviews that say the book spends most of its pages identifying self hate, and gives very little practical advice about how to conquer the hate after it's been identified.

Yes, that's true. Dr Rubin gives a very general outline of the strategy to conquer self hate, and a few examples of what people have done to fight the self hate once it was identified, and not much else. There are very few pages devoted to tactics.

And I think there are two good reasons for that.

First of all, IT'S ALL YOU NEED! Once you identify the self hate, see the general plan of attack, and read a few examples, you should realize that the idea is to do whatever it takes [as mentioned explicitly in the book], and whatever your inner genius advises, to fight back. Because it's not the weapons so much as the fact of attack itself that leads to ultimate victory.

Second, how can the author know what works for you? He has never even seen you. He can only tell you general principles and a few things that worked for other people. But again, that's all you need from the book to succeed. Only you can know what precise tactic will work for you. And if you don't know, keep trying what you sense might work, or use the tactics mentioned in his examples. Because, [I strongly suspect], the fact of fighting itself, win or lose, time after time, is what leads to success.

I'm interested in forming some kind of group to discuss this book and helping people to use it. Any ideas?
The last commenter made very good points, but I hoped I could add to what he said. Nathaniel Branden writes books on self-esteem and if you read multiple books from multiple authors you're expanding your knowledge thereby increasing your chance of finding the answers you seek in helping yourself overcome things like self-sadism and psychoses ( which as Alexander Lowen outlines in Betrayal Of The Body, is the underlying cause of every mental disorder, meaning the different diagnoses in the field of psychology are all secondary symptoms of which the schizoid disorder is its root).
