I leaned my body forward, just barely touching down my right fingertips, opened my body toward the west wall, and lifted my other arm and leg to the sky.

I had great expectations for this book, both because I enjoy neal pollack's writing and am a yoga fanatic, specifically the Astanga series he practices. Disappointment ensued. I dragged myself to the completion of this book, but wish I had abandoned it earlier. He is so smug, so self-satisfied, all the while pretending self-deprecation. What's with the drug use? If you are an ashtanga practitioner, the series offers a tremendous sense of well-being and focus. Its been several months since I read the book, but the distaste lingers.

Neal Pollack is wickedly funny. His life finding yoga is more interesting and believable than many of the yoga "biographies" written by women. Yes, he was paid to explore the yoga a community but so was Elizabeth Gilbert for her Eat, Pray, Love, which I found less than enlightening. I enjoyed Pollack's views of "gurus" and studios and the fact that he unabashedly named names. I'd even like an index to his travelogue of studios, teachers, and styles.

Ashtanga is not my yoga and wonder if the alcohol and drug use is just California yoga or his life. Maybe the book is summed up by the quote on page.116 "If it walked like yoga and quacked like yoga, it wasn't necessarily yoga."

This is an exceptionally entertaining book for everyone, no matter how much you care about yoga. It's hilarious and insightful and self-aware and easy to identify with. I don't particularly care about yoga that much, but I was endlessly entertained and it even sparked my interest in practicing. Neal takes us along on his journey to get back in touch with his best self through yoga and it's some of his best work. It pairs nicely with his "Alternadad" so read that one as well if you haven't yet.

Neal Pollack was mostly known for his sardonic, goofy fiction and journalism back in the day (late 90s, early aughts) - and maintains his trademark snark and cynical touch for his exploration into the philosophy of yoga. The book chronicles his beginnings in yoga as a physical exercise and his discovery of the meditative aspects and how it affected his life philosophically.

Yes, it follows a narrative that would be familiar to many concerning the "underdog discovers himself, then his newfound love in life begets success in his life - which he passes on to others."

But, it's a funny and uplifting ride which only takes a couple sittings to get through.

While Pollack does play up the "dude" part of his persona, "Stretch" does actually interweave the philosophies of yoga and the sutras into his personal story. In this way, it acts as an excellent primer for the beginning yogi (and I'm a perpetual beginner...), while also being a funny romp for the experienced yogi, as is the friend who recommended this book to me.

I gave it five starts based on those reasons: it's a great narrative, it's honest, it's a great primer into exploring yoga and how it helps to shape how one relates to the world. This sounds totally hippy-drippy, but you can tell that Pollack, through his cynical sneering, loves his fellow yogis and pokes fun at them from a place in the heart. A quick, fun, and enjoyable read.

I am three months into starting Yoga and have become hooked. I read (skimmed) a couple of the serious Yoga books and found them interesting, but kinda dry. I just got done reading "Stretch" and have nothing but kudos for the author. Yes, he smokes dope and is a liberal. But wow, the guy sure can write. I have no doubt this book will appeal to a large group of people, but if you are a 30-50 year old guy that is even slightly interested in Yoga read this book. His ability to put words onto the page really describes the Yoga experience (so far) for me. (Minus the dope smoking and LA experience.)

I almost didn't read this because of so many negatives found in the Amazon reviews. However, after reading a Kindle preview, I was intrigued enough to give it a try, and I'm glad I did.

The book is both funny and interesting. It's a fast read. The author seems sincere in telling his journey into yoga, but he also seems obsessed with things that send boys under 13 into giggling fits that many of us find crude.

If you can skip past the gross humor, it's a good yoga memoir.
