overall very enjoyable book with slightly different take on vampires, though with rather lacking story while entertaining and quite funny. Main protagonist is very likeable but side characters are somewhat bland. Romance though is rather amazing.

This book would have gotten a higher rating if the author fully fleshed out more than one character. The idea was original and the set up perfect. The writer has talent, but this was poorly executed/edited.

Darkness Embraced is the first novel in a new series by Winter Pennington. For some unknown reason the book's description didn't really grab me and I wasn't sure I wanted to read it (although the gorgeous cover sure grabbed my attention). I had really enjoyed Pennington's previous books, so with dragging feet I reluctantly started reading. Boy oh boy was I glad I did! It was such a great read and I couldn't put it down until I had finished.

The book follows Epiphany, an underling vampire in the Rosso Lussuria clan. Her first fifty years as a vampire were spent at her queen's side, loved and protected. For reasons she doesn't know she's cast out amongst the other underlings and has to spend the next one hundred and fifty years just surviving. Surviving the loss of her queen, the anger at being cast aside and the attentions of the clan elders.

The only thing that has kept her safe is the friendship of Vasco, one of the elders. His power has shielded her for the last one hundred and fifty years, but now it's time for Epiphany to step forward and challenge for the right to be an elder herself. She's not looking forward to the challenge, not so much the tests themselves, but that she'll have to face her sire and queen and one time love, Renata.

The challenge sets in motion events she could never have imagined. Epiphany is forced to face her own growing power as she steps into the middle of vampire politics, jealousies, ambitions and plots. Most unexpected of all, the realization that maybe, just maybe, her queen still has feelings for her.

Pennington has a wonderful talent at writing paranormal stories. Unlike many of the recent books in the genre that have vamps living amongst humans, Darkness Embraced has the vampire clan living in almost total isolation. This allows for the focus to be totally on the vampires and the clan hierarchy, customs and politics. Vampires and sex seem to go hand in hand and Darkness Embraced embraces the sexuality and sensuality of the main characters and takes them to wild, edgy places.

I think part of my initial hesitation in reading it, was that it was clearly marked as the start of a series. I always worry I'll get to the end and there'll be unresolved story lines and questions and I'll be left feeling frustrated. Thankfully Pennington does a great job of writing a well developed and complete book that can stand on its own, even if she never writes another in the series. Of course having said that, I sure hope she's writing up a storm with more books in the Rosso Lussuria Vampire series and we get to enjoy more stories started so brilliantly in Darkness Embraced.

Vampire, Epiphany, sired by Renata, the Queen of Rosso Lussuria, was Renata's lover for fifty years, until without warning Renata threw her aside to join the rest of the underlings. During the following years, one of the clans elders, Vasco, a gay vampire takes her under his wing and looks out for her. One hundred and fifty years later Epiphany is called upon by Renata to take a series of challenges to become an elder. Epiphany is still angry at Renata for casting her aside, but as Renata is the Queen, Epiphany has no choice but to agree. It's during the course of these challenges that Epiphany realizes that someone within the Rosso Lussuria clan is a traitor and is plotting treason and harm to clan members. She also realizes that she and Renata have unfinished business between them. Could it be that Renata still loves her? Could they become lovers again?
This is the first book in a new series by Winter. What a brilliant beginning. The story is set right in the middle of a clan of vampires. It gives a perfect insight into a vampire hierarchy and the way the undead `live.'
I can't wait for the next book in this series.. It's really nice to see a different perspective into the world of vampires, away from the human world. I hope we don't have to wait for too long.

What a rollercoaster! After finishing the lovely fantasy-romance Keeper of the Piece by Lesley Davis I started Winter's newest Darkness Embraced and was completely hooked. This vampire story gives the world of vampires a whole new twist and although I would have liked a sequel in the Kassandra series after finishing this book I can say Winter is forgiven and has now to produce a sequel to both story-lines asap <lol>. Let me say this much: a totally cute and adorable fox, a strong dominant Italian vampire-queen, a steadfast and witty friend, our submissive and oh so strong heroine and the very impressive vampires vampire (who ever heard of them) ... a tall tale, fast paced, sexy, dark (but not too dark), heroic, tender. Darkness Embraced is a sinfully sexy read. As Ms. Pennington's silken words slither through your mind, you will be drawn into the world of the Rosso Lussuria. I found it easy to slide into Epiphany's skin - to see and feel as she does. The setting and characters sweep you away into a decadently desirable, dangerous, and diabolical creation that will keep you up until the very last word. Epiphany's illusory weakness is her greatest weapon, along with some powerful allies. But can she and her allies overcome even more powerful enemies? Pick up Darkness Embraced and be enthralled.

I am continuously impressed by this author and her ability to trap you in a book. I was thoroughly enjoyed this book, and cant wait for the next one in the series to be released!! Just be careful not to start reading this book at night, because you will not be able to put the book down no matter how early you have to get up in the morning.
I have read a lot of books on vampires but none that I found as intriguing as Darkness Embraced. I absolutely enjoyed this book. The story will capture you from the beginning and not let you go. The author is amazing and exhibits an exceptional gift in telling a story and keeping you interested. The brief description does not do this book justice. Once you start this book you will become one with the characters and won't put it down. Enthralled just doesn't sum it up. If you enjoy a dark, sexy and wickedly enticing romance, you need to read Darkness Embraced. Very exciting read.
