This is a three star book, but it gets an extra star for the recipes, which I felt were a nice touch.

It was an entertaining read, and there was enough drama to keep me interested, but it was a bit scattered, and the first part of the book is just Callie talking about how happy she is. I almost put it down, because I was like, I get it, your life is good. Now something needs to happen.

Then stuff happens and none of it is good.

The characters are supposed to be American, but there are a lot of Britishisms. It’s not a huge deal, but it struck me as odd.

Also, it has that problem a lot of novels have where the characters are somehow able to support themselves with no source of income, or working part time. That always drives me crazy.

I enjoyed the Steffie/Marcus romance, and the coziness of the Sleepy Hollow house.

The parents are described as a free spirited hippie and a grumpy conservative curmudgeon, respectively, but neither of them ever displays any behaviors to support those descriptions. They’re both just normal.

I would have liked to read more about Honor’s experiences as a young wife, or the father’s experiences with his mail order bride. Those vignettes were the most interesting parts of the book.

There is a lot to charm in this book, but it is not my favorite.

I am not as big of a fan of Jane Green's books now as I used to be. Jane Green's earlier books -- Jemima J or Mr. Maybe, for example -- were what I would classify as classic, high-end "chick lit." They were generally about young, single women struggling to find their place in the world....but they were also sharp and funny and witty and heartfelt. Jane Green's fiction today is what I would classify as "women's fiction" with much more "mature" themes about marriage, infidelity, parenting, illness (probably reflecting the author's own different place in life). While there is nothing wrong with those subjects, in my opinion her writing has lost some of the sharp wit and fun of her earlier books. That said, she speaks in a voice that is uniquely hers. I think I could identify one of her novels after reading a single chapter without seeing the title page. And her characters continue to be, for the most part, very sincere and relatable. At the same time, her current books tend to be more depressing and more "inspirational" in subject matter. This book is no exception. I have no real objection to well-written books about difficult subject matters like serious illness, it's just not what drew me to Jane Green and not what I am hoping for when I pick up her books.

Sad,amazing. A story of a family,an amazing woman and a horrendous disease that takes her life. Stephie the chef aghast found her place, Lila who looks for love and callie the woman who the story is about. Her struggle with a rare form of cancer, with a great love and two small children we follow the struggle.

I have read all of Jane Green's previous novels, always with out of control female characters who have to be reigned in by the love of good men, etc. I had just about written her off as an author who only has one template. "Promises to Keep" shows surprising depth of characters and story line, creating empathetic readers. I hope she can use her new found skill to writer another light hearted novel - because I don't read very many of the depressing ones that mirror real life so closely.

I really enjoy Jane Green's books. This is a wonderful book. You will love the characters in this book. Even though it deals with a difficult and sad subject, it is written so you understand and relate to the story. You will cry and smile.

Heartwisting, and emotional, a lovely book but oh so sad. Really makes an impact on viewing your daily existence and the value of family and friends.

I loved this book. So sad at times, but I couldn't put it down. Good book for someone going thru the process of a terminal family member or friend.
I enjoyed this story. Very well written but sad. Jane Greens books are quick easy reads and makes you think about how you would respond in those situations. I have yet to read a Jane Green book I didn't like.
