Its winds already threatened gale force. Or you might say that a fire, begun with a low crackle in the underbrush, would soon be roaring through the treetops. Unless we can call a halt, Ian thought. But how? He turned on the desk light and went over the newspaper for the third time that morning. Well, that was partially true.

The story while entertaining was extremely unrealistic on many levels. The characters were not very sympathetic, especially the main character, the mom, Sally. She was whiny and stupidly kept her mouth shut rather than stand up to her own husband to protect her child. Your heart could break for the child who has two parents who are at best negligent in their care and at worst, complicit in what happened to her by their sheer stupidity and blindness. The police investigation is a total joke. No police department would have left the death of a prominent individual hanging the way they did just "waiting" for someone to confess. Very disappointing as I generally do enjoy Belva Plain's books but unfortunately her writing, specifically the dialogue of the characters sounds like something in the early 1900's...rather than the 1990's. Very unrealistic, stilted, old fashioned dialogue that just doesn't work any longer in modern times. If she was writing in a different time period the language would be fine. But I do not know any people on the planet that speak the way these characters do. Pretty disappointing...

Great book by a wonderful story teller. You keep waiting to get back to the book to find out what happens next. Good characters in the family and the various threads work together.

I loved this book, could not put it down. It has a few slow spots but it is well worth the read. Great family saga.

I have read all off Belva Plain's Books. She 's a excellent writer, very versatile, and most of
her stories include family relations. I would suggest that you start with her book called EVERGREEN.

I have given most of Plain's books a 4 or 5 star, but I found this one a struggle to get through. It is very predictable unlike most
of her stories.

A good book is one in which I think about the characters when I am not reading, this was the case with The Carousel. It tackles a tough subject and shows how diligent we must be with such things.

I have read almost everyone of her books and love the way she draws you into the characters lives......
