“Even the air is palpable in Tumbling...The story moves forth on the power of Ms. McKinney-Whetstone’s characters. Ms. McKinney-Whetstone captures the formidable struggle to protect both a community and a family.” —New York Times Book Review

“Warm and intimate.... Tumbling is an accomplished novel, with sharply drawn characters, exuberant prose, plenty of period detail and a wise, forgiving outlook on family life.” — Los Angeles Times Book Review

The beloved bestselling debut novel that launched the luminous career of Diane McKinney Whetstone, critically acclaimed author of Tempest Rising, Blues Dancing, Leaving Cecil Street, and Trading Dreams at Midnight. Writing in a style as accessible as Terry McMillan (Waiting to Exhale, How Stella Got Her Groove Back), yet with the literary touches of Toni Morrison (Beloved, Song of Solomon), McKinney Whetstone’s Tumbling is the “warm and wonderful” (Nikki Giovanni), beautiful and uplifting story of Noon and Herbie and their tight-knit Philadelphia neighborhood in the 1940s and 50s.

Reviews about Tumbling: A Novel (7):
Dangerous
I read this wonderful book years ago, but forgot to submit my review of one of my all time favorites!
Tumbling is the nostalgic story of Herbie and Noon, a simple couple who stumble along the way toward falling back in love. This story proves that true love is worth waiting for. The couple stays together (not always side by side:-) but through thick and thin. Love conquers ALL their fears, insecurities, infidelities, and other adversities. Mrs. Whetstone takes her time unraveling the story, but it enables the reader to savor the flavor and hold on to the love which is buried (not hidden) deep in the characters' hearts. Love never fails.
Diane McKinney-Whetstone is such an excellent writer. She sculptures her words to form the most vivid characters and settings. Her writing will make you smell the scents, recognize the faces, and experience the emotions (joy and pain).
I loved Tumbling, and HIGHLY recommend it to others who love the magic and beauty of words. This is truly one worth falling for...

I absolutely loved the authors description of the characters, they were vivid, I could clearly picture them in their antics! Tumbling was at times moving, filled with suspense, but definitely not predictable. My new, favorite author!

Very interesting read, it examines multiple family dynamics with a sense of humor, honesty and grace. You will begin to question your own identity within your own family. The characters aren't perfect, but they are definitely brave.

Excellent book. I brought it for my daughter for school but I actually read it with her. It was well written and relevant for the past and present time.

This was the first novel I've read by McKinney-Whetstone but it certainly won't be my last. What a beautiful novel; it actually reminded me of Toni Morrison's Jazz and any novelist who can conjure up images of Toni Morrison with only her FIRST attempt has got to be some kind of genius. Noon and Herbie love each other but have never been able to consummate their marriage due to a horrible secret in Noon's past. Within a span of five years they find not one, but two children sitting on their doorstep and they create a surrogate family for themselves. With love, courage and strength this family is able to stand up to outsiders who threaten to destroy their community, and heal themselves and their family in the process. You will fall in love with this beautiful novel!

This book is quite hard to find, but very poignant and a necessary read for it's audience. The story is a unique on and you neither fall in love with the characters, nor to do you hate them. They are real, and flawed. Love "Tumbling"!

This has been one of the most captivating books that I have read in a long time. This book captured my interest from page one and maintained it until the last page. This book left me wanting more after the book was over. I would highly recommend this book to anyone that desires to curl up on the couch with a cup of hot coco and, enjoyably, become lost in another place and time. A+++
I've read "Blues Dancing" and enjoyed it. How I missed this one escapes me. But I also bought "Tempest Rising" at the same time I bought this and I am not mad about a thang! This is literature. If you're tired of reading all of this worthless crap out now diguised as books, then stop and pick this one up. Sit back, relax and enjoy. I also pre-ordered her new one. All in all I am now a true fan of DMW. I'm not sure what kind of person wouldn't agree that this is a great read....
