Camus, Albert, 1913–1960. Translation of L’étranger. In the second half of the novel Camus gives freer rein to a lyricism which is his alone as he takes Meursault, now stripped of his liberty, beyond sensation to enforced memory, unsatisfied desire and, finally, to a kind of understanding. In this stylistic difference between the two parts, as everywhere, an impossible fidelity has been my purpose. No sentence in French literature in English translation is better known than the opening sentence of The Stranger. It has become a sacred cow of sorts, and I have changed it.

In THE STRANGER by Albert Camus, the character Meursault is a man apart. The book originally translated by Stuart Gilbert is an excellent representaion of how Camus would have wanted people to read his writing in English. Though he exists w/ other humans, he is obviously on an entirely different wavelength! Meursault will commit a heinous crime. The copy I received is translated by by Matthew Ward and is a horrible translation which slaughters the brilliant writing skills that Camus possessed. See photo of the first pages for proof, you will notice the difference in how the words come across.

Just finished reading "The Stranger" yesterday and while I enjoyed the analysis I've seen on this subreddit delving into Meursault's character, I think there's a little more going on (which may be fairly obvious, but I haven't really seen it discussed). I don't think Meursault is particularly that deep of a character.
