Jo-Jo is a soldier on the front line of Alphabet City, the notorious neighborhood embedded in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, where professional couples compete with drug dealers and muggers for control of the street-and vie with welfare families for possession of the area’s crumbling buildings.

Joel Rose is an American journalist and novelist. His novels include The Blackest Bird (2007), Kill the Poor (1988), and Kill Kill Faster Faster (1988). He also authored the urban historical, New York Sawed in Half: An Urban Historical (2001). His journalism has appeared in Black Book Magazine, Bomb Magazine, Details, The Los Angeles Times, Marie Claire, New York Magazine, New York Newsday, The New York Times, and PAPER Magazine, among others.

Kill the Poor is director Alan Taylor's screen adaptation of a novel by Joel Rose. The film is set in Manhattan's Alphabet City in the early 1980s, when the neighborhood was a center of illegal drug activity. The film's title comes from the Dead Kennedys song "Kill the Poor". Kill the Poor begins with a fire in the apartment of tough guy Carlos DeJesus and his trouble-making son, Segundo. The screenplay then focuses on the other tenants of the rundown building in an attempt to determine who set the blaze.

The premise of the book is the beginning I read Kill the Poor for a second time because I couldn't remember most of it. It takes place in my neighborhood, but on the mythical "Avenue E" which the author created; there is no Avenue E in Manhattan.

Rose's first novel, Kill the Poor (Atlantic Monthly, 1988), is also set on Manhattan's Lower East Side, an area Rose knows well. For large collections and those interested in experimental writing.

Set in the melting pot of New York's Lower East Side, this powerful first novel delineates the urban frontiers that bend the shape of the American dream beyond recognition.

Rose's tale of homesteading in the postmodern city can be annoying in its affectations, especially the narrator's use of Black English. Nevertheless, there's a compelling if somewhat weird sense of both community and history in this book-a fiction that thinks it's only about survival, plain and simple. Pub Date: Oct. 27th, 1988.

I bought this because the author is my namesake. It's interesting but weird.

I just finished working on a feature film based on this novel. It was a great experience. After I read the script, I read the book. Both are powerful, emotional, truthful and moving. The movie is going to be a wonderful piece of work. The book already is.

Kill the Poor is not a bad read but it lacks any real impact. It is based around the adventures and conversations of folk in a particular neighbourhood, but not a lot happens and the characters are not well developed. I htink there are better books for your money.
