Reviews about Howl: Dark Tales of the Feral and Infernal (4):

I'm writing this review as a dedicated Horror & Thriller fiction fan.
The subject matter in this anthology covers all tastes of the horror genre from some great up and coming authors from around the world.
I will state up front that I myself have a tale included in this book. (Introducing Gemma Nye)
I won't comment on my own story but the rest of the books fiction and poetry is very entertaining and thought provoking as it delves into the peculiar aspects of animalistic horror. This covers shape-shifters, were-creatures and the most terrifiying of all; the bestial nature of man!

If you like short tales full of action, suspense (And a bit of blood, gore and sexiness) You'll love this horror gem by the independant Lame Goat's Press.

The book features some well established authors that you may have already came across in other books and mahazines as well as some new and exciting talents as well.

Buy this today, turn the lights down low and enjoy!!!

This howling collection of morphing creatures and nightmares has already achieved status by hosting three authors of honorable mention merit by Ellen Datlow. Between these pages, stories of wolves, ravens, demons, owls, lizardmen, The Lady Red, fanged puppies (and more) explore awakenings of the animal within. Give in to the fierce extremes of lust and love. Mark Crittenden leaves a torch on the dark path of horror. Hurry. Read it. Or something will eat you.

First facts upfront (to dispell some of the cynics who disparage reviews of small press books) I do NOT have a story in this anthology.

This is a fantastic collection of tales, from established and new authors alike. More than just werewolves (though you'll find a few interesting takes on that mythology within) the biggest thing you take away from this anthology is the wealth of new ideas and new talent emerging in the "genre fiction" field.

These span history and geography, from a hell-hound on the Welsh Moors, to a cattle rustler in the Old West who finds out what happens "when you mess with the bull..." to a white-trash Werebear.

Most stories have their genesis in real myths, but the characters and descriptions breath fresh life into them.

Particular gems are "Introducing Gemma Nye", which is smart, sexy, and gross all at once; "Legend of La Chusa" in which a monstrous owl becomes the spirit of vengeance. There is also a fantastic riff on the Brothers Grimm, and the haunting tale, "The Hunt" which begins simply, with a little black fox.

It's not a grand-slam, and with the inclusion of many new and first-time authors, there are still some rough edges here and there, but in most cases, the freshness of the ideas is ample reason to forgive. Out of 34 stories, there are only 4 or 5 clinkers that either run long or don't work quite well enough to hold the interest.

All in all, a solid purchase.

This volume terrorizes the reader from beginning to end. In particular, "The Vulture" stuns the mind. And oh what witch craft can do. And all in the service of discriminated male teachers. You might cauf blood after reading this one. The same with the other stories. They are unreal in their ability to terrify.
