The Inspector Rebus books are a series of detective novels by the Scottish author Ian Rankin. The novels, centred on Detective Inspector John Rebus, are mostly based in and around Edinburgh. The books are written in third person limited omniscient mode, focusing on Rebus, with the point of view sometimes shifting to colleagues, petty criminals or suspects. The stories belong to the genre of police procedural detective fiction, with a hardboiled aspect that has led to them being dubbed 'Tartan Noir'.

His 15 police procedurals featuring the dour Scottish Detective Inspector John Rebus are beginning, at last, to attract a devoted-and deserved-following in this country. St. Martin's has just published this, Rankin's 1992 collection of short stories, and I can't think of a better way to be introduced to John Rebus and his creator. Dubbed "Tartan Noir" by James Ellroy, Rankin's tales are set in Edinburgh. Not in the beautiful streets that tourists.

I found these short stories excellent to dip in and out of. Having been used to Rankin's novels, I really didn't think the short stories would hold my interest, but I thought they were well written and with just enough action to keep me interested. Fluffyblue, June 4, 2008.

A Good Hanging contains twelve remarkable, gritty stories starring Detective Inspector John Rebus in his home city of Edinburgh, as only Ian Rankin can portray it: not just the tearooms and cobbled streets of the tourist brochures, but a modern urban metropolis with a full range of criminals and their victims--blackmailers, peeping Toms, and more than one kind of murderer. It's a city like any other, a city that gives birth to crimes of passion, accidents, and long-hidden jealousy, and a city in which criminal minds find it all too easy to fade into the shadows. As dedicated readers of the series well know, nobody is better equipped to delve into Edinburgh's back alleys and smoky pubs than Rebus, and no one better able to illuminate his world than Ian Rankin.

This is a another great book in the Rebus series. I started by reading one of the more recent of Ian Rankin's Rebus books and then went back to the first in the series and have been running through them all quickly. I do think that there is something to be said for starting with the first and as the series progresses a lot of new information builds on the characters. Like the Henning Mankell series in Sweden,(Wallender) the landscape and culture in Scotland is an integral part of the storytelling.

Seems to be very early Rebus. At the end we are urged to read Knots and Crosses, the first Rebus novel. Looks like these stories preceded the novels.

Good pace with well executed plot twists. Also a variety of atmosphere and tone which keeps up reader's interest .

I have never read an Ian Rankin book I didn't like. When he writes about Reus, it is even better. This booze-loving middle-aged Scot seems an unlikely character to be such a good cop---but he is. His titles also give an insight into his story..read this and enjoy.

these are short stories so there's not a lot of room for character development. I found the tone so understated as to be kind of dull. And the plots kind of boil down to one-twist brainteasers - I guess that's an occupational hazard of the mystery short story.

short stories are just that....to short for great development
Rebus short stories. They do not disappoint.
