Heather Ross Miller (born 1939) is an American writer. In 1961, she earned a bachelor's degree from Woman's College (now The University of North Carolina at Greensboro). She went on to earn an MFA in creative writing from the college in 1969. For the 1968-69 and 1973–74 years, she earned fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts. Inspired by professor and poet Randall Jarrell, Miller became an instructor in reading and writing.

In all three of the named sections of her book, the poet dares the reader to see, and what she would have the reader see is not the appearance that normally passes for reality. In the final section’s title poem, the speaker says, I command you: tell me,! do waked-up eyes recognize anything? Does the hard evidence! at first hand! live up to your promising land?

These new poems continue that exploration, focusing on "tough women" who endure the quiet grinding down of unhappy marriages, failed girlhood dreams, years of keeping house - women for whom the "years go by and good things don't happen.
