The Works and Days (Ancient Greek: Ἔργα καὶ Ἡμέραι, Erga kai Hēmerai) is a didactic poem of some 800 lines written by the ancient Greek poet Hesiod around 700 BC. At its center, the Works and Days is a farmer's almanac in which Hesiod instructs his brother Perses in the agricultural arts.

Hesiod, the early Greek poet and rhapsode who presumably lived around 700 BCE, serves as a major source for knowledge of Greek mythology, farming techniques, archaic Greek astronomy and ancient time-keeping. West is a Professor of Greek at Royal Holloway and Bedford New College, University of London. I went with Penguin's version over Oxford because they included Theognis' Elegies as well, which is the bulk of this book. Works and Days is a more practical, down to earth sort of work, dealing with social, farming, and religious advice. Theognis' Elegies are a very curious mixture of ethical and social maxims, and numerous love poems from elder to protege.

Hesiod was one of the first great Greek poets, living during the 8th Century .

Hesiod was one of the first great Greek poets, living during the 8th Century BCE: the same time period as Homer. His two classics are The Theogony and Works and Days. The Theogony is an essential work of its time. Theogony functioned as an all-encompassing book on religious matters for Ancient Greeks. Works and Days is routinely referred to as one of history's first books on economics. Hesiod's theory is simple and often repeated in other cultures: if one works hard and tries his best, his goodwill and effort will usually bring him success and happiness.

Hesiod is generally remembered for two epic works, Theogony and Works and Days but, like his contemporary Homer . According to historian Thomas Martin in his book Ancient Greece, Hesiod viewed justice as a divine quality – embodied in Zeus – that would punish evildoers.

Hesiod is generally remembered for two epic works, Theogony and Works and Days but, like his contemporary Homer, he was part of an oral tradition and his works were only put into written form decades after his death. Work and Days is a tribute to the benefits of a life devoted to work and prudence. However, to Martin, Homer’s Zeus was only concerned with the fate of his beloved warriors in battle ; a trait evident in both the Iliad and Odyssey.

Hesiod, who lived in Boetia in the late eighth century BC, is one of the oldest known, and possibly the oldest of Greek poets. In contrast, Works and Days is a compendium of moral and practical advice on husbandry, and throws unique and fascinating light on archaic Greek society

A clear, modern translation of two vital works of Greek mythology, this collection presents The Theogony, telling the story of how the gods of Ancient Greece established control over the cosmos, and Works and Days, suggesting that labor is the universal lot of humankind as well as the source of all good in the world. Here are exhilarating and earthy tales of shepherds, farmers, peasants, astrology, the Olympian muses, and the great Zeus himself. These sonnet translations of Ancient Greek poems are an excellent source of musicality, craftsmanship, and wit.
