This book is not only a picture window into the lives of our neighborhood genius/weirdos but a well orchestrated look .

This book is not only a picture window into the lives of our neighborhood genius/weirdos but a well orchestrated look at the quirks and unsettling habits of our next-door neighbors, teachers, and even family. I will give this as a present to my literati friends AND my Oprah Book Club friends and though their readings may differ I have no doubt their enjoyment will not be diminished in the least.

Poet and jazz musician Al Young plays the introductory notes for this anthology about living or thinking on the edge

Poet and jazz musician Al Young plays the introductory notes for this anthology about living or thinking on the edge. This collection of poems is a powerful montage, a complex portrait of the ways in which a society is fractured. Written from beyond the pale by those who don't belong to a majority or dominant group, these poems enter the world of the homeless man on the street, the body of Joan of Arc, the mind of a man who lives between two countries

She taught poetry at Emerson College, at the MFA in Creative Writing Program at Sarah Lawrence College, and at many conferences such as The Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, MA, the Frost Place Poetry Festival in New-Hampshire, and the Palm Beach Poetry Festival in Florida.

"Every last one of us is someone else's Outsider," Al Young says in the introductory notes for this collection. The poets Lucille Clifton, Mark Doty, Joy Harjo, Maxine Kumin, and Stanley Kunitz, among others, address the guises of alienation and loneliness and celebrate the stranger in society.

I did find a few gems in this collection, but was fairly disappointed with most of it.

Many fine poems -- a real treat, and a nice clean copy.
Ynye
beautiful poems.

This book is a must have for any teenager who is taking a look at the world and how it is unfair to everyone in all these different ways. It has poems about everything from the Holocaust to Love and everything in between. I would recommend you get his book, as it is a great source of views from people who are everyone else's outsiders.
