Herbert the Pervert has done it again. Favourite book of the year, two years in a row. I know the year isn't over yet, but nothing can top this. NOTHING. Sex and death. Death and sex. Or as Kastle puts it: hot bodies, cold bodies.

The plot centres around the production of the first mainstream Hollywood film in which the actors perform actual sex. There's the writer (probably a Kastle stand-in) whose novel the movie is to be based on; his girlfriend Cecily, who is to be the leading lady; Rob Dennings (a Charlton Heston-type actor) who is to be the leading man; as well as a supporting cast of an assortment of people involved with the movie behind-the-scenes, and some of their friends, family, acquaintances. When misfortunes begin to occur, many fear there is a curse upon the film, and all involved are marked for destruction.

I can't think of a book with a cast so messed-up. There are so many personality disorders on display here, so many hopelessly sick people, it almost makes me despair for humanity. And then I remember this is a fiction, most of the world isn't like that-- I hope. Phew!

You hear the stories about Hollywood: casting couches, success at all costs, greed, excess, orgies. It's all here, none of it sugar-coated. Pedos, sex tapes, drugs, rape, murder, insanity. Not many things these days are shocking, but I was genuinely shocked reading this book. My heart broke for people so lost that they'd do the things these characters do. People so desperate, confused, corrupted, and sometimes downright evil that they found the most horrible acts not only acceptable, but normal. Just another day at the office.
