I, like some of the other readers, read this book for the first time while in high school. Every time I am in a mood for a good book, this one is close by. I think that I have read this book couple of dozen times in the last ten years. Would recommend this book to anyone looking to escape for a few hours.

A distant patch of road can appear wet on a hot summer day due to the heat rising from the heat road surface. There are some conflicts in the summer holidays between the two girls through the conflicts, the readers can be very clear of what a girl the protagonist is. It refracts (move, bend, or deflect) the image of the road in a wavy manner creating the illusion of water.

Reviews about Distant Summer (7):
Hawk Flying
I picked up a cheap secondhand copy of this book years ago, and then loaned it to a college friend. It was never returned, but you realize how much the story stayed with me considering that 15+ years later, I bought it again. I don't want to spell out the entire story for you (that would spoil the suspense and the story's beautiful ending); but it is set during the air raids in Britain during WWII. The main character is an older teenage girl whose life is changed by the war, the changing practical demands of it upon civilians, and the interactions with the fliers at the nearby base. It is a coming-of-age (Bildungsroman) story, yes; but it is timeless, for what the young lady experiences and feels, the reader knows he/she has also experienced and felt; and one comes away from the story feeling that one has learned and grown a great deal within one's own heart.
This was my absolute favorite book to read as a teen and I read it over and over again! I loved England, even though I'd never been at that point in my life. I also love WWII history and this book is fascinating to read as it brings this story right into your mind. It is extremely well written and very accurate. I would recommend this book to everyone.
I love this book. I wish the author had kept writing. I first read it 30 years ago and enjoyed it just as much this time around. You know it is a good story when you keep thinking about it and it makes your heart ache.
grand star
I first read this novel when I was fourteen as a readers digest condensed book. I liked it so much that when I had the opportunity to buy it as a paperback I did. I carried it with me as a treasured keepsake until a storm ruined the book. I can't tell how pleased I was to rediscover the characters again in a hardcover book
This is a wonderful story. I first read it in high school but have read it may times over. I purchased this copy as a gift for a friend, who LOVED the story. It is set in WWII about a young 17 yr old girl and how the war changes her life.
The Rollers of Vildar
I read this book almost 20 years ago and loved it. I've kept my copy and have enjoyed re-reading it many times over the past years.
This is the story of a 16 year old girl who finds love with a rear gunner during WWII. He won't allow himself to trust, to love. He knows he's a dead man walking and she should have her whole life ahead of him. She's a little self centered (who isn't at 16?). Through love and patience Kate grows up and teaches Johnny that his life is worth living and she is worth the risk of love.
This is a beautiful story infused with information about the RAF, the war, England's war effort.
These are star crossed lovers, haunted by the external forces keeping them apart.
If you get a hold of this book, read, enjoy. Kate's story will become part of you and Johnny's pain will stir your soul.
A definate keeper!
WW11 from the Brutish perspective, as told by one of the "girls left behind" - at night the planes fly out to bomb Germany, but in the morning, only half of them return - and her boy friend is out there, somewhere.... quite an emotional roller-coaster ride - I felt like i was right there with them - will definitely be looking for more books from this author
Like so many of the other reviewers, I read this book when I was a teenager. It's been over 25 years since I read it and it's still the best book I ever read. My copy was ruined in a flood years ago and I never replaced it. I came here to see if I could get a copy for my friend's teenage daughter and I am going to buy one for myself too, to re-read Kate and Johnny's story. Every teenage girl should read this book!!
