Pamela; or, Virtue Rewarded is an epistolary novel by English writer Samuel Richardson, a novel which was first published in 1740. Considered the first true English novel, it serves as Richardson's version of conduct literature about marriage. Pamela tells the story of a 16-year-old maidservant named Pamela Andrews, whose employer, Mr. B, a wealthy landowner, makes unwanted and inappropriate advances towards her after the death of his mother.

Pamela; Or, virtue rewarded. with an Introduction. WHEN Pamela, or Virtue Rewarded appeared in two volumes in November 1740 it was soon what we should call a ‘best seller’, the first example of that phenomenon in the history of English fiction. Everybody read it; there was a ‘Pamela’ rage, and Pamela motifs appeared on teacups and fans. Many praised the novel enthusiastically both for its liveliness and its morality, but some condemned the work as undignified and low, seeing in the servant girl’s story a pernicious ‘levelling’ tendency.

Pamela: Or, Virtue Rewarded (Penguin Classics). I read a lot of opinions about Richardson book. Someone said this book has witchcraft because you cannot put it down. A young man attempts to rape her. (He's the guy who kidnaps he. He tries to make her his mistress. Eventually, he gives up and tells her she can go home to her parents. Well something of that happened to me. At the beginning I was so disgusted that I put it aside and tried to forget about so much nonsense. However, after a while I began to wonder how that nonsense would end. I began to get addicted, could not stop until I finished.

Book from Project Gutenberg: Pamela, or Virtue Rewarded.

By: Samuel Richardson. She rejects him continually, and her virtue is eventually rewarded when he shows his sincerity by proposing an equitable marriage to her. A Narrative which has its Foundation in TRUTH and NATURE; and at the same time that it agreeably entertains, by a Variety of curious and affecting Incidents, is intirely divested of all those Images, which, in too many Pieces calculated for Amusement only, tend to inflame the Minds they should instruct.

It is a long nutty book. Pamela is a commoner who stands up to a number of aristocrats. Someone said this book has witchcraft because you cannot put it down

It is a long nutty book. She also is kidnapped, tortured, and abused.

Pamela, or Virtue Rewarded is an epistolary novel by Samuel Richardson, first published in 1740. It tells the story of a maid named Pamela whose master, Mr. B., makes unwanted advances towards her. She rejects him continually, and her virtue is eventually rewarded when he shows his sincerity by proposing an equitable marriage to her. In the second part of the novel, Pamela attempts to accommodate herself to upper-class society and to build a successful relationship with him. The story was widely mocked at the time for its perceived licentiousness and it inspired Henry Fielding (among many others) to write two parodies: Shamela (1741), about Pamela's true identity; and Joseph Andrews (1742), about Pamela’s brother. Reviews about Pamela: Virtue Rewarded (Forgotten Books) (3):
Prince Persie
Mentioned in Lucy Worsley's YouTube, A Very British Romance as the earliest English romance. It was so popular in its day, 1700's, one could buy Pamela fans. Real bells rang in churches when the fictitious Pamela married. The story is written as a journal of letters written as poor Pamela, a maid, kidnapped by then married to a "naughty" Lord. She faints a number of times which spares her from rape, then influences the rake by her own good character and conduct. He finds he cannot live without her.

Implausible, verbose, moralizing. One would CAN' T imagine reading it twice, but ought to once.

This is a good example of an early epistolary novel.

It's interesting to read one of the original romance novels, but by today's standards it is a little ridiculous to have a romance revolve around attempted rape. It is also incredibly long and runs one. However, as a historical study it is fascinating to see the elements that would inspire Jane Austen and other later authors.
