Paulo Coelho’s life may well be itself worthy of a homely book

Paulo Coelho’s life may well be itself worthy of a homely book. During his adolescence he was committed to a psychiatric hospital by his own parents, who believed that his rebellious attitude was a sign of madness; it was under such parental guidance that he was subjected to the horrors of electroshock therapy. In his twenties, Coelho dropped out of law school to travel around South America; he later became a journalist. After a life-changing pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, he decided to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a writer. Here are 10 of his most memorable novels.

Brida, Paulo Coelho Brida is a novel by Brazilian author Paulo Coelho. This book made me wish that he had made better use of what mystical powers or insights he might have to have written a more engaging story. It is the story of a beautiful young Irish girl and her quest for knowledge. She finds a hermit mage who teaches her to overcome fear and a witch who teaches her how to dance to the hidden music of the world. They see in her a gift, but must let her make her own voyage of discovery. As Brida seeks her destiny, she struggles to find a balance between her relationships and her desire to transform herself.

I've said before that Coelho never disappoints, and this book is as true to that statement as ever. I am not even halfway through my first reading, and I am again amazed at his storytelling acumen, and how each of his books (I've read four to date) is unique in it's style, yet true to his heart.

As an aside, this is the third book that the love of my life (who lives far away) and I are reading to each other over the phone every morning. We read about three pages a day, so as to savor the flavor and aroma of Coelho's great talent.

I am wildly crazy about Coelho's books in general. I think he's one of the world's most gifted living writers. His ability to explore zeitgeist spiritual topics in the form of fiction and still have a compelling narrative is unfathomable. The star deduction for this one is because in some ways, it felt a like an old man's fantasy of sex with a younger woman. (I won't spoil the plot and let you know whether or not they do it.) I think there was also a lack of realistic relationship development between Wicca and Brida - in my experience as a woman, I felt it was unlikely to unfurl that way. I've been the student and the teacher, and this just felt unnatural.

It is a great book, better than most things one can read, but not Coelho's best work in my humble opinion.

As I finish this book I have regained hope; hope in humanity, hope in the path I have to walk. There's lessons on humility, on the value of every person, and the wisdom of nature and the universe, with which we are one. It is a book about the power of love, courage, and the most mundane things that work as a bridge between the rational and the irrational, sanity and madness, the visible and the invisible. Lastly, it is about the balance between the "magical" and our everyday lives not being mutually exclusive but rather symbiotic. Once again, Coelho manages to speak to my soul and remind me it is beautiful to be alive and that I know a lot more than what I give myself credit for: all I have to do is trust the dark night.

Reads like a rough draft of a young adult novel- I mean it feels sparse, not poorly edited. Like a well-developed outline that never got fully fleshed out. Interesting ideas and some beautiful thoughts mixed in with hoo-hoo pseudoscience and some straight-up patriarchal traditionalism (misogyny) that the reader may choose to excuse given the author's origins in Rio de Janeiro. On the upshot, it reads rapidly and can be digested in a night or two, so it's not a huge waste of time if you end up disliking it, and if you love it, awesome!

I read this book for the first time when I was 17 and I am reading it for the second time now that I’ve recently turned 25. It’s a beautiful story that has either consciously or subconsciously been a major influence on my perception of the world for all this time.

This was my first Paulo Coelho book and I have loved all of his writings ever since. His words speak to my soul in a way that no language can describe.

I seem to find answers to my questions of my journey in these novels by Coelho. The timing is always right for me when they appear on my night stand. To be reminded of how love is the only path, that mistakes are necessary and great teachers appear when we are ready for our transformation, is a joy & a comfort. I love these stories and am sad when they are done, but I carry the learning and pleasant joys with me on my path.
Its been a while since I read it but my recollection is that it gave a great perspective from a female pov. Brida is on a path to find her vocation of being a witch. Her search leads her to people of great wisdom, who begin to teach Brida about the spiritual world. She meets a wise man who dwells in a forest, who teaches her about overcoming her fears and trusting in the goodness of the world, and a woman who teaches her how to dance to the music of the world, and how to pray to the moon. As Brida seeks her destiny, she struggles to find a balance between her relationships and her desire to become a witch.

Though the story is about learning magic and becoming a witch. It really resonates with any quest to become good and even excel at something. That journey means leaving behind things or people you might love and only moving forward with what is essential to the new journey. It also means that those people you admire most make crucial relationships but you must also have appropriate boundaries in those boundaries. A great read. Truly enjoyed it.
