Bell, James Madison, 1826-1902. This volume of poetry includes a bigraphical sketch of the author, James Madison Bell (1826-1902), by Bishop Benjamin William Arnett (1838-1906). According to Arnett, Bell was an African-American poet, orator, and political activist. He was an Ohio native who lived in Canada and San Francisco before settling with his family in Toledo in 1865. James Madison Bell (April 3, 1826 – 1902) was an African-American poet, orator, and political activist who was involved in the abolitionist movement against slavery. Bell was born in Gallipolis, Ohio, on April 3, 1826. He moved to Cincinnati in 1842. He moved to Cincinnati in 1842 where he lived with his brother-in-law George Knight and worked as a plasterer. In the evenings, he attended Cincinnati High School for Colored People, which had been established by Reverend Hiram S. Gilmore

In i842 he removed to Cincin17 years nati, Ohio, and lived with his brother-in-law, George Knight, and learned the plasterer's trade. Mr. Knight was one of the best mechanics in the city. While living in Toledo, J. Madison Bell was elected a delegate from Lucas county to the state convention, and there he was elected as a delegate. from the state of Ohio to the national convention, which met in Philadelphia, May, 1872. At this convention General Grant was renominated for the presidency of the United States.
