The second book in the Gaslight Mysteries series, 2000. To Roselyn O’Brien and all the staff and volunteers. Her own husband had been murdered a little more than three years ago, and just last April, Sarah had helped solve the murder of another unfortunate young woman. Although she sometimes had to deal with death in the course of her work, that at least was natural. She’d hoped never again to encounter the kind that came unnaturally, from the violent hand of another. Sarah didn’t have to push her way into the Ottos’ flat.

When a young mother who had safely delivered a new baby the day before is found dead and accusations begin to fly between the girl's Irish mother and her Italian in-laws, midwife Sarah Brandt joins forces with Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy to unravel the truth before the entire community erupts into deadly violence. 15,000 first printing.

I am addicted to cozy mysteries, especially ones set in the past. Victoria Thompson's "Gaslight Mystery" series sweetly satisfies my me and feeds my addiction Set in the Lower East Side of New York around the turn of the last century, Thompson combines charming (except for the villains and fools) characters with well-researched period details. Every book increases our knowledge about New York society and lifestyles of the period as well as exploring one aspect in greater depth. In "Little Italy" we are drawn into the lifestyle and mores of Italian immigrants. Mama's is a popular Italian restaurant, and everyone on the staff is family. Sarah, a midwife, is called in to deliver a baby (she's a midwife) and as always happens, someone ends up dead -- murdered. Enter Frank Malloy, a detective sergeant who, amazingly, is not corrupt, but he is Irish -- and the Irish and Italians have no love for each other. Tammany Hall and the head of the Cosa Nostra are pulling strings behind the scenes, and, as usual, Sarah ends up in a dangerous, life-threatening position. A great read! Why only 4 stars, you ask. Malloy and others are always warning Sarah to avoid dangerous situations, but she routinely charges right ahead even though you KNOW she shouldn't be headed where she is.

One can always count on Victoria Thompson to deliver a good, tightly plotted mystery with just enough clues early on to allow the reader to figure out "who done it" if they pay attention, but not enough to make it obvious. Just like all of the Gaslight Mysteries, this book is well worth the reader's time.

This is the eighth book in the Gaslight Mystery series of books by this author. Set against a backdrop of turn of the twentieth century New York City life that encompasses the teeming tenements of the poor and the stately homes of the wealthy, these books are replete with period detail. They chronicle the investigatory adventures of Sarah Brandt, a former socialite turned midwife, and Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy of the New York City Police Department. As these books are part of a series, it is strongly recommended that they be read in the order in which they were written.

In this book, Sarah is called upon to attend the birth of a young mother, Nainsi Ruocco, who is an Irish girl married to an young Italian man from a close knit family. When Sarah attends Nainsi, she is lead to believe that this is to be a premature birth. When the baby arrives, however, he proves to be a chubby cherub with no indicia whatsoever of being premature. This causes a ruckus in the family, as it had been a shotgun wedding, but it was now clear that the baby had been conceived before Nainsi and her husband had even met. To complicate matters even more, when Sarah returns to check up on the new mother, Nainsi is found dead in her bed.

Although the family believes that her death was from childbirth complications, Sarah is firm in her conviction that the girl was murdered in her bed. So, Sarah does what she always does in these circumstances, and enlists the aid of her friend, Detective Sergeant Malloy. Little did they know that this case would enflame the passions of both the Irish and Italian immigrant communities. When yet another murder occurs, not even the political machinations of Tammany Hall or the looming threat of the Black Hand, a precursor to the Mafia, will stop this indomitable duo from seeking justice and finding the killer.

The main characters are well-developed, and the dialogue is credible, moving the story along at a brisk pace. With each book, the backdrop stories of the lives of the main characters are fleshed out. At the core of it all is the evolving relationship between Sarah and Malloy, a relationship that is constrained by the social mores of the time. While the mysteries are intriguing, they are the framework around which the characters evolve. Those who like historical fiction and mysteries will enjoy this well-written series of books.

So many series begin to suffer from familiarity but the Sarah Brandt mysteries do not have that ailment. Midwife Sarah is called to the Ruocco restaurant in Little Italy for the premature birth of Antonio and his Irish wife Nainsi. Much to the chagrin of the family, the baby is a full term healthy boy. Thus, he could not be Antonio's baby. Mama Ruocco demands that the girl and the baby be put out on the street immediately. Calmer heads pevail and they are allowed to stay, temporarily. By the next morning Nainsi is dead by suffocation. Sarah and Detective Frank Malloy begin searching for the murderer.

Theodore Roosevelt makes an appearance as one of the New York police commissioners. The anomosity between the Italian and Irish immigrants are presented in a straightforward manner. The machinations of Tammany Hall are touched upon. The characterizations are fully drawn and another layer is added to the relationship between Sarah and Malloy. This is a satisfying series.

One of my favorites of Victoria Thompson's Gaslight series. A full picture of life in New York at the turn of the 20th century and the conflict between Italians and Irish. Fully developed characters includes actual historical figures like Teddy Roosevelt. I love the interaction between Sarah and Frank Malloy. The ending was a surprise to me. Recommended for fans of this series and of period mysteries.

These Gaslight Mysteries by Victoria Thompson are so interesting to read! This book delves into the lives of a dysfunctional Italian family. Sarah is called upon to deliver the baby of an Irish wife who is married to one of the Italian sons. When it becomes glaringly apparent that the baby is not his and the new mother is found dead, everyone is a suspect. The unraveling of the motives along with the description of 19th century detective work make the plot more intriguing. I love that once I start reading, it is inevitable that I will become so engrossed in the story I won't want to stop! I would definitely recommend this book!

I'm well into the series and still entertained. Molly's constant glaring and frustration with Sarah is becoming a bit wearing and tedious; it's past time for him to lighten up a little. Just purchased #9. Good series. I hope Vino is a carry-over character and I'd like to see Scott Webster again.
