It was a strange series of events, that made ex-cop, Otis Tweedy, and his wife, Sarah, move across the Atlantic to live in the small town of Cappawhite, Ireland. And it was another strange set of circumstances that would not only threaten their sanity, but also their very existence. Something had happened to Sarah, something vile, something unmentionable, that even the church did not fully understand.

Gerald J Tate (born 6 February 1954, Belfast) is a Northern Irish horror writer, who is also a time served aircraft engineer. Director Ron Howard has been in talks with the author since 2007. It was hoped Cappawhite would be made into a movie.

Start reading Dead Village, Cappawhite III (Cappawhite Trilogy Book 3) on your Kindle in under a minute. I have just finished reading Dead Village, Cappawhite 3, and I must say, this book was well worth the wait. Normally, and in my opinion, I have found that the third book or film in any series is usually never as good as the previous efforts. Well, Mr Tate hit this one right on the button. Dead Village had me on the edge of my seat throughout, but it is the unpredicable ending, oh and what an ending, that sliced it for me. A great trilogy, but sort of sad that it's now over.

It had been five years since Dan Winters and the small band fought the demons in the forest of Cappawhite. Since then none of them have had any memory of the event, erased by a higher force. Now though, and just when it seemed that normality had returned to the quiet village, strange occurrences are happening.

This book is simply outstanding. I was so engrossed I didn't see the time fly passed. Los Angeles cop, Otis Tweedy gets so badly injured that he is medically discharged from the force. It's around the sixties period and racism in America is rife. Then Otis's Irish born wife Sarah suggests they move to Ireland, to a house she has inherited over there.
They move alright, but they didn't count on Sarah getting involed with the demon lurking nearby. Without giving away too much, it's all on Otis to save her, and what he does, well, I'll let you find that one out for yourself.

This story just about rivetted me to the spot. A great refreshing story about an Afro American ex cop, Otis, who comes to Ireland with his Irish born wife, after she is bequethed a house in a small village there. Told to stay away from the house up the lane, Sarah gets involved with a fierce entity which is lurking there. Powerful read.

Otis and Sarah Tweedy inherited a home in Cappawhite, Ireland (hence the title of the book.) Otis, an African-American is cynical about the "ghosts" that the locals believe to exist in the Tweedy's new home, while Sarah, an Irish-American, does.

When Sarah's soul becomes the next victim of the mysterious Banshee, it will be up to Otis to finally believe in order to save his wife before it's too late.

Gerald Tate has written an interesting ghost story mixed with love, which is unusual coming from a male writer.

The reader will hope for a good outcome and believe with Otis that love does conquer all.

Cappawhite ia a great horror novel in the classic sense:

People are faced with horrible choices in order to confront an ancient, nasty beast that has haunted human beings through history.

But it goes beyond other conventions of the genre in its attention to detail, presentatioin of great characters, and the simple love of telling a fine story!

The main story is set in 1967 when a bi-racial couple returns to Ireland ot live in a house that the wife has inherited from an Uncle. In settling in they encounter local prejudice, and a whole cast of colorful local charcters -- each with a gulity past and personal demons they are trying to excise.

Cappawhite was well-written, engaging and heart-breaking. Tate's characters are well drawn and believable.

Mr. Tate also does a great job of pulling the reader into his story and making you care what happens to each person you encounter. The final resolution in this book is not predictable, and haunting, and you find yourself moved, and rooting for various characters. The story is also about love, loyalty and sacrifice.

A definite page-turner, and a riveting read!

I'll be honest -- I never read horror stuff anymore, but I stumbled on Tate's book and highly recommend it. It's a gripping tale about Otis Tweedy, an ex-police officer, who moves to Ireland with his wife Sarah after she inherits an old house there in the woods. That simple backdrop leads readers into a truly horrifying tale that begins as soon as Sarah encounter an "entity" in the old house.

Other reviews on AMAZON will give you the gist of the story. My review shold be taken in the context that I actually live in the parish of Cappawhite in Co. Tipperary. While the author apparently chose the name of 'Cappawhite' as being somewhat spookey, the story is not in any way based on Cappawhite itself. So descriptions of locations (apart from Armshaws pub!) are purely fictional. So, if you have connections with Cappawhite and expect to recognise some of the locations mentioned, then, you will be dissappointed. Of course, the book does not set out to be actually baed on Cappawhite. Nonetheless, a little more research on Cappawhite itself and how the village and parish might have been in the late 1960s would have added to the enjoyment of this first novel.

Moving onto the story itself, it is supposed to be a 'ghost' story, a 'riverting read' according to a previous reviewer. I have to say I found it poorly constructed and far from a so-called 'riveting read'. The local characters in the main are poorly developed and not that representative of typical characters living in a rural village in the late 60s. As a ghost story, it fails to thrill or arouse any sense of ghoulishness at all.

A final point: there are a few occasions of either spelling or gramatical errors which further reflects the amateur production of this book.

Recommended? Only if you are from Cappawhite and have a curiousity about a novel which borrows the name of the village. If you are into ghost stories, you will find much better out there. Give this one a miss.

I borrowed this book from a friend and have to admit I enjoyed it very much. To be honest I do not get much time to read books nowadays but I made the effort and am quite pleased I did. Once I started I could not put the book down. I have since ordered another book which I intend to send it to my son as a gift. He is a great reader and I would like to hear his opinion. I am from N. Ireland myself and unlike one reviewer I found Cappawhite an unforgettable read, a great book to take on holiday and a hard book to put down. I will be visiting county Kerry during July and will make a point of calling in to Cappawhite and having a yarn with the locals. Hopefully there will be a sequel and I will look forward to it very much.
Tate strikes a commendable balance in his tale, set mostly in the turbulent 60s at the pastorale town of Cappawhite: perfect parts social commentary and ghost story. He also delivers the requisite amount of gore while weaving a mythos that spans numerous cultures, past and present. Three-dimensional characters, namely Otis Tweedy, a disfigured ex-cop forced to contend with the specters of racism and a merciless, ancient evil that has set its sites upon his wife, support the story nicely.

Gerald Tate is an exciting new author, and Cappawhite, his first novel, is a page-turner, one of those books that's perfect for a stormy night on the sofa -- just be sure to turn the lights on!
