America Star Books, formerly PublishAmerica, is a Maryland-based print-on-demand book publisher founded in 1999 by Lawrence Alvin "Larry" Clopper III and Willem Meiners. Some writers and authors' advocates have accused the company of being a vanity press while representing itself as a "traditional publisher". It changed its name in 2014, and since 2017 it has stopped accepting new authors.

Tal Darkrunner's book takes place during the 1st half of 'Stark Surrender', Book 4 in the LodeStar Series. But it can be read as a stand-alone, and there are NO SPOILERS for Bk 4. As I wrote 'Stark Pleasure', I kinda fell for this bad boy ganger lord, and decided he needed a bad girl of his very own.

When the impetuous Persis Allen marries Union Pacific railroad baron Alex Mackinney, she gets the life of luxury and frontier adventure she hoped for . . . at a price. Caught up at once in the lusty drama of Butte City and Helena, she meets wealthy cattlemen and miners and glimpses the strange poverty of prostitutes and opium smokers. The parites, balls, and flirtations at first seem the ideal backdrop for the handsome and aspiring couple. But a crack appears in this perfect vignette, and no matter how hard a terrified Persis tries to patch the fissure, it widens into a yawning abyss of danger. Alone and stunned into a brutal recognition of the truth, Persis must confront her own choice between life and death.

I recently read a very expressive blog by Anne Ronney, author. She says quite rightly that “Fictional historical writing…flourishes in the gaps in history.” She likens it to the ancient Japanese art of Kintsugi in which the artist makes something beautiful from broken objects by highlighting the breaks, often by filling them in with resin enriched with gold. Sarie Mackay’s Lodestar is a wonderful example of this technique, especially since it takes place in what many Montanans like to think of as the “Golden Age” of Helena, Butte and surrounds in the late 19th Century. Mackay’s protagonist, Persis Allen, moves from New York to marry railroad baron, Alex MacKinney. The husband soon reveals horrific marital flaws that send “Percy’s” newlywed dreams up in thicker smoke than that from the roasting pits of her new home Butte, Montana. Mackay’s writing animates the era through very subtle references to the horse and railroad cultures that include details of the time-appropriate equine transport and vivid descriptions of train and stage travel of the day. One senses that the surprising details in the book such as divorces being relatively commonplace for the times are thoroughly researched and provided with spot-on accuracy. Sarie Mackay couples beautifully lyrical writing with historical precision making Lodestar one of the brightest in the firmament.

Amazing first book! Loved how the history is intertwined with the romance of a very strong minded and spiritual woman in Persis. Great read!

Sarie, great book. I loved it. Simply fantastic, my friend!

The story is so intense I could not put the book down....I actually felt like I could feel the ground and smell the smells. This book wraps you in a very powerful and rare embrace.
