Run Silent, Run Deep" was his first novel and became an immediate bestseller. To that extent, and with these qualifications, this book, though fiction, is true.

Run Silent, Run Deep" was his first novel and became an immediate bestseller. Run Silent, Run Deep. by Commander Edward L. Beach, U S N. This is a work of fiction. There is no conscious attempt to portray any actual person or character, living or dead, and any conclusions or opinions which may appear to have been reached herein are strictly original and bear no relation to Navy Department, policy, past, present, or future. Falls Church, Virginia, January 26, 1955. Deep in the sea there is no motion, no sound, save that put there by the insane humors of man.

Run Silent, Run Deep is a novel by Commander (later Captain) Edward L. Beach Jr. published in 1955 by Henry Holt & Co. Run Silent, Run Deep is also the name of a 1958 film of the same name starring Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster. The story describes World War II submarine warfare in the Pacific Ocean, and deals with themes of vengeance, endurance, courage, loyalty and honor, and how these can be tested during wartime. The name refers to "silent running", a submarine stealth tactic.

Run Silent, Run Deep. The slow, smooth stirring of the deep ocean currents, the high-frequency snapping or popping of ocean life, even the occasional snort or burble of a porpoise are all in low key, subdued, responsive to the primordial quietness of the deep. Of life there is, of course, plenty, and of death too, for neither is strange to the ocean.

Run Silent Run Deep book. An American equivalent of Das Boot, this gripping, bestselling.

Few war novels will rival Run Silent, Run Deep in the naked realism of its action. Edward Beach re-creates with fidelity the anguish, agony, and triumphs of command decisions. None will surpass its rising excitement and brilliant descriptions of men in combat. Unlike many war novels, here is a story that deals with war from the perspective of command. In Commander Richardson, he has created a character who embodies all that is fine, all that is human, in an excellent naval officer

Run Silent Run Deep is a great classic WW2 submarine novel, wrote by the late Captain beech who fought the Japanese from various subs, commanded a WW2 sub, an oilier, skipper of the Titan ( a huge, duel nuclear reactor sub), set a record around the world submerged in the Titan and was a Naval aid to President Eisenhower. Edward Beach is a submariner who writes very well, or a superb writer who also was a helluva submariner--take your pick. For World War II naval fiction--much of it based on factual war patrols--this is a required book for any library.

Having owned the "movie" based on this book, I wondered "what/how" the complete story line actually was/played out. This book DID NOT DISAPPOINT ME!!! Danger under the sea, including threats of imminent/immediate (or lingering) death---this book is GREAT!!! (My own father was "in the Navy" & "arrived in Pearl Harbor" a few days after the attack. He told my Mom some "pretty horrible stories" which she passed on to me in the early 1950's.
The book arrived in a TIMELY MANNER & IN GREAT SHAPE!!! THANK YOU!!! gwg

If you want to get the feel of what it was like to serve on a Gato boat in WWII this book, along with Beach's companion work, Dust on the Sea, are the best fictional works out there. Beach served as both the executive officer and captain of submarines during WWII and much of the Cold War. Throw in his history works ( "Submarine ") and one gets a pretty good picture of the challenges. I'd also highly recommend some more recent historical "diaries", e.g., O'Kane, Gallatin, Mendenhall, Ruhe, Ruiz. Harry Homewood's fictional books provide more of an enlisted man's view. Homewood was a WWII sub vet. Herman Wouk's two works have a lot of submarining as a small part of very long historical fiction works. Craig De Louie has started a series that's pretty good too. But you have to start with Beach

I first read this book over 20 years ago and when I saw it was available as a Kindle book I had to get it. After all the time that had passed since first reading it all I could remember was that I thought at the time it was one of the best WWII submarine books that I had ever read. I wondered if I would feel the same way reading it so many years later, but I wasn't disappointed. This remains a great book and I highly recommend it.

Hard hitting, suspense filled novel of World War II submarine operations in the Pacific derived from the real stories of Dudley (Mush) Morton, Vice Admiral Lockwood and the Subrons making up Operation Barney. Puts you in the boat, the people seem real and so does the plot line because it is fiction taken from fact. There is a reason Ed Beach and his Dad have a hall named for them at Annapolis, they could both turn a phrase on paper and turn on the imagination of any reader. Ed Beach is the quintessential submariner form his war patrols in WW 2 to serving as Dwight D. Eisenhower's Chief of Staff, to Commanding Nautilus on her maiden voyage. No one writes Navy better than Ed Beach. If you buy this book and start reading it, it will go faster than a diesel sub on the surface with all four Fairbanks Morse engines at flank! The pace is incredible and the action and imagery stay with you long after the book is done and back on the shelf. Must read for any aspiring Naval Officer, whether undersea, or tasked to hunt subs! Travels deep into the psyche of the Commanders and Crews of those who volunteer to wear dolphins. The movie of the same name doesn't hold a candle to the book.

I'm a fan of the late Captain Beech Jr. I've read almost all of his submarine books. All 5 stars. See my reviews.

Beach was highly decorated with medals of valor. Beach was a man who knew submarines and used his detailed experiences and knowledge to write a fast paced action WW2 submarine novel. No boring parts. I read the book in two days and had difficulty putting it down. The characters Lt. Commander Richardson, XO Jim Bledsoe, third officer Keith, Captain Blunt and others are superbly shown in this great book.

We see the heroism attacking and destroying the Japanese destroyer skippered by the infamous Japanese Captain "Bungo Peat". This Captain was an expert at seeking out and destroying US subs attacking convoys he helped protect. Skipper Lt Commander Richardson and crew on the US sub Eel finally sink the destroyer and Captain "Bungo Peat". Lots more action but I won't ruin the book for you.

I also bought the DVD Run Silent Run Deep staring Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster. The ending was different than the book. 5 star DVD. Buy the book first than view the DVD. Both great!

Even though this is a novel of fiction , the reader is drawn into the novel with life like characters and submarine detail. A first rate book. Anyone who served in the Navy or has an interest in WW2 diesel "boats" subs will love this book. Rated 5 stars.

FABULOUS book! Extremely well-written, we could not put it down. Normally I don't care for novels, preferring real life stories, and especially those about submarines, but I made an exception for this one since Beach was a retired submariner, and I figured he would write about his experiences -- and he did. Excellent adventure and excitement, kept me on the edge of my chair. And it practically mirrors many of the patrols we have read about in other true stories about the war at sea. A MUST read!

The best of the WWII submarine novels by a career officer who served in the wartime Silent Service. Beach served aboard the submarines USS Trigger and USS Tirante, and took command of USS Piper just as the Pacific War was ending. He was awarded the Navy Cross and Silver and Bronze Stars. In other words he was the real deal and his book reflects it (as does the sequel Dust on the Sea). There are other good WWII submarine books out there but Run Silent, Run Deep is the standard - and a very high one at that.
This is my 3rd or 4th copy that I've purchased. I have read this so often the book falls apart and has to be replaced in my library.
