Mitchell wrote only one novel, published during her lifetime, the American Civil War-era novel Gone with the Wind, for which she won the National Book Award for Most Distinguished Novel of 1936 and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1937. In more recent years, a collection of Mitchell's girlhood writings and a novella she wrote as a teenager, Lost Laysen, have been published

The world saw only one book by Margaret Mitchell published in her lifetime, the incomparable Gone With the Wind, the most popular novel in American history. But it isn't, of course, and Lost Laysen also enchants because of the many fascinating ways it foretells Gone With the Wind: in its two central male characters, one a gentleman and the other more rough-hewn, who vie for the attention of a feisty, independent-minded woman, and who will go to any lengths to defend her honor; in its re-creation of a vanished world; and in its unforgettable ending. The real-life romance at the heart of Lost Laysen's discovery is as enthralling as any work of fiction.

In 1916, this story of 4 chapters, was written by hand, in a little less than a month, by a little lady of 15 years old. Awesome. Sure is - I'd like somebody to make a movie of this. There certainly is a story line, the characters are interesting, the dialogue is concise and crisp. I will not describe the story or its outcome except to say that it is intense and its impact is felt by the first reading. From beginning to end the story moves quickly to its finale. You've probably noticed the writer's name. Right, she's the same, Margaret Mitchell. Also in this book you will find more of her personal history.

I LOVE GWTW so I bought this as soon as I learned of it. A stink bomb.

Revelatory best describes content, the photographs worth the proverbial thousand words. Margaret Mitchell's charmed life seems less so as one reads the collection of letters she penned. The manuscript of Lost Laysen is an appropriate ending for the book and the beginning of a better appreciation of Mitchell's longstanding proclivity for creative thought and expression.

Having read "Gone With the Wind" for the first time ever recently, this additional book was a nice surprise. I enjoyed the background and pictures of Margaret Mitchell as a young lady, and this early unknown writing shows her talent for story telling.

Margaret Mitchell could have written thousands of stories. There's a reason she only published one. This novella was good, but needed more room to grow. The letters and background of her life were interesting. Combining those with her young writing, really gives fans a look into what made Mitchell who she was.
good
