Jane Aiken Hodge was born in the US. Hodge does a great job capturing the uncertainties of living in a war zone. Some of the family twists, turns, and resolutions are a bit unrealistic, but no more so than other stories. It is a great portrayal of people living on their wits and thinking on their feet with lots of personal growth. The people are well fleshed out, non of the cardboard H and h, I genuinely liked them all, even when I wanted to smack them at times. 2 people found this helpful.

I first read this when I was a teen.
I loved it then, and love it 40 years later.
The history is seamlessly worked in to the story.

I have liked most of Hodges work, this remains my favorite.

Retreating French troops in the Napoleonic wars ravage a Baron's estate, and only his daughter, Sonia, who has hidden herself in the hayloft, survives. She joins a young man with a mysterious past, resolving to earn their living playing whist with soldiers. Together with Sonia's former governess, they follow the troops towards Paris. Spies, battles, and ghosts of their pasts foil their plans along the way. This is a delightful historical romance. I can't vouch for the history, but the characters are wonderful and the plot runs nicely, beginning to end.
one life
This book and 'Bride of Dreams' are my two favourite Hodge books so far (I haven't read them all yet!). I only recently discovered this author and as a Georgette Heyer fan I really enjoy Hodge too. This book is particularly good because it doesn't fall into the trap of putting historical details before story (as many of Hodge's books do). It has a good plot, great characters (including an unusually young hero who is about 22 I think), and, as the title suggests, a lot of adventure. The romance is nice but not sickly. A very enjoyable book.
