Reviews about Frozen Assets: Return of the Intrepid Dr.Love (2):
Very good & prompt
James Leasor who had written a prodigious number of espionage novels (including a James Bond follow-up series) wrote this one over 30 years ago around 1985 as one of his "Dr. Jason Love" series. Love is a British country doctor who gets involved in espionage stuff and in this dull book he is enticed into what seems to be an insurance investigation of a very heavily insured unique ultra-expensive automobile located in Pakistan. The enticer is an insurance company executive still connected with good old MI6 (British intelligence) and off Love goes to Pakistan and Afghanistan at just the time the Russians are pulling out.
I won't go into the details of the plot which at first is straightforward but steadily gets more complex and at the same time boring. Halfway through I was hoping the end would come quickly. Leasor (and I had read a few of his novels decades ago and liked them) fell right into the espionage-author trap is unduly complicating a plot which the reader could otherwise have followed much more easily. He certainly gets kudos for a very knowledgeable exposition of life and politics in Pakistan and Afghanistan at the time (be very glad you don't live in either) but knowing the local color can not rescue this novel from tediousness and unnecessary side-plot diversions.
In summary it's not a very good read and you certainly can find other espionage novels/thrillers that will have a much better claim on your valuable time.
