Saints and Villains book. I picked up this book partly because I wanted to read something by Denise Giardina, a renowned West Virginia author. I was surprised to find this, inasmuch as I assumed all of her books were about Appalachia. But, I have always been intrigued with Dietrich Bonhoeffer, but didn't know much at all about his life, so I picked it up. I was hesitant to read this because I realize it was a work of historical fiction, and I do intend to delve more into the life of this heroic and brilliant man.

Saints and Villains gives us this exemplary life in a sweeping narrative that is bold in conception and utterly convincing in its power of imaginative reconstruction. She is the author of Good King Harry, Saints and Villains, Storming Heaven, and The Unquiet Earth.

Though she sticks to the facts where chronology is concerned, she does introduce three fictional characters into her protagonist's life as a means of illuminating his most private aspects.

In the charnel house that was Europe in the Second World War, there were few instances of shining moral courage, let along secular sainthood. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the German theologian and Nazi resister was the exception. This emblematic figure risked his life-and finally lost it-through his participation in a failed plot to assassinate Hitler and topple his regime.

An astonishing historical novel in the tradition of Schindler's List-evoking powerfully the danger and heroism of the Nazi resistance. What is the price of acting morally in a time of great evil, when sin and necessity seem twinned? Saints and Villains is a strikingly resonant novel that dramatizes this painful dilemma through the fictional re-creation of the life of Dietrich Bonhoeffer.

Denise Giardina is an American novelist. Her book Storming Heaven was a Discovery Selection of the Book-of-the-Month Club and received the 1987 W. D. Weatherford Award for the best published work about the Appalachian South. The Unquiet Earth received an American Book Award and the Lillian Smith Book Award for fiction.

This is no bodice-ripper masquerading as historical fiction. If you have always wondered what it was like to live in Germany, especially from 1933-1941, as a good person within the Reich, this is a fantastic book. At times the writing feels so immediate it's hard to remember it is a piece of fiction. For readers not totally immersed in Nazi Germany, it will be helpful to have access to Wikipedia to look up facts, but not it's not required to understand on an emotional level. The question the author wants us to ponder is, how does a person with good morals exist during a regime that utilizes all its power to corrupt and commit atrocities. This book was some of the best I've ever read, truly a masterwork

Denise Giardina has done a masterful job bringing one of my favorite Christian Martyrs to life. She evokes Bonhoeffer the man, the horrific time he lived in, and the hard choices he made, with sensitivity and insight. As a Christian woman who has had mixed experiences in Church I related deeply on many levels with how Giardina brought out the necessary separation of church & state (or any spiritual path & state). Maybe people who are raised in church can easily confuse loyalty to one's government with commitment to one's spiritual path. This confusion is more of a danger if the religion you believe in is also the official State religion, as Christianity has been in the West for so many centuries. Giardina's portrayal of the Reichchurch, and how it was in collusion with the Nazi Government is chilling, and is a lesson we need to remember. A person who is truly connected to a Higher Power in their spiritual practice should be able to discern the difference between Good and Evil, but having the courage to act accordingly can only come from that power that is Higher than Worldly Governments. This courage is the crux of Christian martyrdom, and Giardina's picture of Boenhoeffer brought out that he could act no differently, just as his predecessor, Martin Luther, was compelled to act according to his convictions, perhaps whether he wanted to or not, & they burned heretics in Luther's time (part of the "hideous corruption" that Giardina wrote of in connection to the church).

Superbly written.....a gripping story of real events.....hard to put down.......especially if one has some knowledge of the Bonhoeffer saga in real time history. Germany and the US in the 20's and 30's....a turbulent time. Committed Christians conflicted over political turmoil encroaching on their liberty and the Nazi's persecution of the Jews. D. Bonhoefer, not quite a saint, but an example of Christian conscience in action.....and one who paid the ultimate price for it.

This is a wonderful book about Dietrich Bonhoeffer. A German man who had several chances to escape the nazis, he instead stayed in Germany to help the resistance as it tried to overthrow Hitler.

I read this book several years ago and then loaned it to someone who did not return it....now I wished to reread it. I thought the book was excellent and wished that a movie could be made of it...Later news said a movie was being considered, but it never materialized. This account of Dietrich Bonhoeffer shows the divisivness of the German people over their opinion of Hitler. Bonhoeffer died because he opposed Hitler. He is the saint who many do not recognize today.

I have long wanted to read more about this time in history and about Bonhoffer. This was an excellent way to do it. Read at the same time I was reading In the Garden of Beasts added even another layer as I could see the players moving back and forth between the two novels.

This book was slow moving at first but well written and based on the life of this man. I recommend it.
Ms Denise Giardina presents a dynamic walk thorugh moral choices and dilemmas. It forces the reader to examine what they believe and make adjustments. Using Bonhoeffer as an example, she places decisions upon the heart of the reader which requires thought. Great Work!
