The Apologist is a deliciously funny satire on the complexity and greed of international – and personal – politics, as well as a powerful paean to the diplomatic role of a well-made almond soufflé. A very funny book about apologies – by someone who has a lot to apologise fo. Anthony Bourdain. But it’s not a novel about food, despite the protagonist being (surprise!) a restaurant critic; in fact it’s intended as a satire on the modern apology: its vacuity, its point^lessness and the lack of any real heart behind it.

Jay Rayner's sizzling satire on the culture of contrition, The Apologist, displays an unnerving prescience, says Charlie . He writes a novel called The Day of Atonement and follows it up with one called The Apologist. This isn't a one-night stand with apologies; it's love

Jay Rayner's sizzling satire on the culture of contrition, The Apologist, displays an unnerving prescience, says Charlie Lee-Potter. This isn't a one-night stand with apologies; it's love. His new protagonist is a flabby, sexually inadequate journalist called Marc Basset, who's so good at begging forgiveness that he gets to be chief apologist for the United Nations. He's the Billy Bunter of the Sorry Trade. His sorrys are big, fat, juicy ones, just like Marc himself.

When the critic is made to apologize to the chef's family, the world takes notice.

Built of delicate layers of heinous crime, forgiveness, and outrageous gastronomy, Jay Rayner's hilarious new novel is an arch comedy of modern appetite and etiquette

Built of delicate layers of heinous crime, forgiveness, and outrageous gastronomy, Jay Rayner's hilarious new novel is an arch comedy of modern appetite and etiquette. Marc Basset has a well-deserved reputation as a pitiless restaurant critic.

The Apologist's tear-streaked narrator is, like Rayner, a restaurant critic on a London broadsheet. The timeliness of the novel is a terrific coup, and Rayner could hardly be expected to predict the flurry of apologies that recently issued from the White House and Downing Street

The Apologist's tear-streaked narrator is, like Rayner, a restaurant critic on a London broadsheet. Apology tastes sweet, and Basset, a man of huge and esoteric appetite, is hooked. The timeliness of the novel is a terrific coup, and Rayner could hardly be expected to predict the flurry of apologies that recently issued from the White House and Downing Street. Yet in his round-up of "apologisable" atrocities, events in the Gulf remain a howling lacuna. The Apologist runs hard on the heels of the zeitgeist, but it never quite closes in for the kill.
