Alexandre Dumas (1802 - 1870) was a French writer. Many of his historical novels of high adventure were originally published as serials, including The Count of Monte Cristo, The Three Musketeers, Twenty Years After and The Vicomte de Bragelonne: Ten Years Later. I chose this book because I figured it would be well written, given that the author is Alexandre Dumas. Parts of it are very colorful and exciting, but with my limited knowledge of European history, I am unfamiliar with many of the people he names in great profusion.

Dumas, in fact, wrote his 'Crimes Celebres' just prior to launching upon his wonderful series of historical novels, and they may therefore be considered as source books, whence he was to draw so much of that far-reaching and intimate knowledge of inner history which has perennially astonished his readers. The name of the noted and notorious Florentine family has become a synonym for intrigue and violence, and yet the Borgias have not been without stanch defenders in history. Another famous Italian story is that of the Cenci.

0 5 Author: Alexandre Dumas. There are dreadful - perhaps scurrilous - rumors about the Borgias of renaissance Italy, and here Dumas, author of such classics as THE THREE MUSKETEERS, in his Celebrated Crimes series, dishes up the dirt in all its ugly glory. This book was not written for children. Dumas has minced no words in describing the violent scenes of a violent time. In some instances facts appear distorted out of their true perspective, and in others the author makes unwarranted charges. The careful, mature reader - for whom the books are intended - will.
