At Weddings and Wakes: .has been added to your Cart. As rendered through Ms. McDermott's rich, supple prose, and infused with her quiet emotional wisdom, the story of these three children and their family assumes a kind of mythic resonance: it becomes a parable about all families and all families' encounters with love, mortality, and sorrow.

The wedding party arrived in two cars. Momma and Veronica and Agnes in the second, with the three children perched carefully on the jump seats. The girls wore their Easter dresses, the boy his navy-blue Confirmation suit that was already too short in the sleeves

Alice McDemott writes with so much soul that one can actually feel her words. Her vivid descriptions told in excruciating detail, move one to tears at times. I had not known much about Ms. mcDermott but after reading "SOMEONE", I was hooked on her writing style. I have read every book this author has written. She is truly a gifted writer.

This is a well written but melancholy novel. The characters are very real and somewhat endearing and the novel structure with it constant time shifts is very interesting. It is a window on a different time in this nation, a story of immigrants and their adaptation to the new world. It was not as difficult an adaptation as it has been for immigrants from areas other than Europe, although I understand Irish immigrants suffered their share of discrimination and rejection. I liked it but did not love it.

I LOVED this book, it was a beautiful read.

This is the third McDermott book I've read (Charming Billy and Child of My Heart) and the first one that I didn't absolutely love. The writing is beautiful, but the lack of anything remotely resembling a plot made it a bit of a slog for me. Rather than rely on a through line, it read like a family scrapbook taken in a very particular place and time.

As usual, I found the characters well drawn and slightly mysterious, with the exception of the mother whose unhappiness I can only say must have been genetic.

Still a fan of McDermott's. There is no doubt she is hugely talented.

Read this years ago. Must have given it away and bought this copy just to have it.. I'll get back to it. Just loved it.

I love her books! Have read several of them. They are written in a very different style that compels you to focus on all the words & get lost in the beautiful prose.

It was a good story, I liked the characters, but I was left disappointed at the end. Cliff hangers are good, but sometimes a person needs a bit more closure.
Sorry, I didn't get it. I know she is an acclaimed writer but for me it was just sad and disjointed. Not my kind of read.
