Kill Your Friends' is a scathing satire of the music industry, based on Niven's brief career as an A&R working for a variety of record companies, including London Records and Independiente, during which he passed up the chance to sign Colplay and Muse. It is a wonderful novel with much deserved acclaim, as are his two other novels. As a side note, 'Kill Your Friends' is currently slated to become a film, and is in pre-production at present with a slated 2014 release.
Kill Your Friends is the debut novel by the Scottish writer John Niven. It was published in 2008 by William Heinemann. The novel is set in 1997 at the height of the Britpop music scene. The protagonist, Steven Stelfox, is unhappy about his current position as an A&R agent in the record company he works for in London. Stelfox, uninterested in most music, is jealous of his coworkers' success in finding successful musical acts and attempts to climb the career ladder amidst competition.
John Niven was born in Irvine, Ayrshire. He is the author of the novella Music from Big Pink and the novels Kill Your Friends, The Amateurs, The Second Coming, Cold Hands, Straight White Male, The Sunshine Cruise Company and No Good Deed. Библиографические данные.
Even the ‘Killing your friends’ part is a let down. Steven kills someone that he clearly has nothing but contempt for in the first third of the book

So, that this movie is based on a contemporary bestseller known for it's incredible dark style should be a clue.
To call John Niven's Kill Your Friends a satire on the music industry is a wicked understatement. Stelfox's ranting does eventually pall, as The Brits merge into Glastonbury, and Niven's attempt to up the ante by pushing him towards Patrick Bateman-esque monstrosity frankly doesn't work.
