The Cancer woman is a moon maiden. Her soul is innately connected to the mysteries and magic of the luminous orb that rules the tides. Her ruling element is water, which explains her deeply connected intuition and her natural way of being in touch with her emotions – and she has so many emotions. However, if her trust is betrayed, she’ll cut you off permanently and never speak your name again. A Cancer woman’s personality traits are ruled by their feelings, and though they think they do a decent job of hiding that fact, a Cancer in a huff can create quite a little hurricane of passive aggression.

Angels and Bolters: Women´s Cancer Scripts tells stories of women with cancer. Dr. Ritchie, former Chief of Psychiatry at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, reminds us that fighting is only one part of the cancer journey. She compares the cancer journey to movie scripts and describes five:

In the Good War script, cancer is an enemy that invades from outside, an enemy you must fight. You do whatever it takes to win; you are a cofighter on the team with your doctors and nurses, where being strong matters most and where you are praised for being brave and heroic. This is the official cancer script; having cancer has become synonymous with fighting cancer.

In the Taking Control script the cancer is just another problem. It may be a big problem, maybe the biggest problem you face, but it is not the only thing in your life. When you Take Control you make your own choices. You may even choose to say no. Some women learn everything about their cancer and the treatments available, and many decide to use alternative or experimental therapy. In the Taking Control script, being strong does not always mean fighting.

In the Sadness and Loss script cancer is a thief that steals something valuable from you. What it takes may not even have a name, but you feel its loss and you must learn how to live without it. On Sadness and Loss days, you are very aware of what you have lost. Different women grieve differently; some are sad, others are angry or numb, and some feel everything all at the same time.

In the Love Story script, cancer is a shared burden. You become closer to family and friends, and you have unexpected visits and gifts from people you didn´t know well and didn´t know cared about you. You discover, perhaps to your surprise, that there are good things about having cancer.

In the Transformation script, cancer is a wake-up call that prompts you to change your life for the better. You begin to think in a new way about your life, about what is important. You may find a new spiritual or religious understanding, or make changes in your job or family situation. You let go of things that no longer matter. The Transformation script is not about winning or losing; it is about how you live your life.

Your cancer journey may follow one of these scripts, all of them, or none of them, or you may have other scripts that fit your life. Every day is a new day and may require a new script; when you have cancer you don´t have to be consistent!

Angels and Bolters is MUST for those touched by cancer.
Dr Ritchie gives readers comfort and support by identifying the various characters one meets such as:
"Virtual bolters may be physically present but act as if you were no longer there. They ignore you, as if you were invisible. You find yourself not invited to events, as if you didn't exist."
and the Clueless "Cancer is not really a problem. (e.g., Losing your hair/body part/health is not really a problem.)
Cancer is really a blessing. (You'll find out who your friends are. Cancer is a gift from God because you are so strong.)
You caused your cancer.(Remember that time you had a negative thought? You are not praying hard enough.)"
"Preachers are anxious to give you advice and information. They are convinced that they know what is best for you, and they go out of their way to share their answers."
Angels - "An angel knows how to listen to the answer, how to listen to what you say and to what you're not saying. You can cry with angels and you can laugh with them, sometimes both at the same time."
Travelers - "For fellow travelers, your cancer journey is their journey. Family members become fellow travelers out of necessity. Others stick with you by choice. When you have cancer, they have it too. And in some ways their journey is harder, a time of frustration and powerlessness. While you can fight the cancer, they can only observe."
This book is a terrific gift for yourself and your friends.
