Steve Katz (May 14, 1935 – August 4, 2019) was an American writer. He is considered an early post-modern or avant-garde writer for works such as The Exagggerations of Peter Prince (1968), and Saw (1972). His collection of stories, Creamy & Delicious (1970), was mentioned in Larry McCaffery's list of the 100 greatest books of the 20th century where it was named "The most extreme and perfectly executed fictional work to emerge from the Pop Art scene of the late 60.

FLORRY OF WASHINGTON HEIGHTS By Steve Katz. 206 pp. Los Angeles: Sun & Moon Press. STEVE KATZ, the author of nine previous books (''Creamy and Delicious,'' ''The Weight of Antony'' and ''Wier & Pouce'' are among them), has a reputation for innovative fiction. In his new novel, however, he has written a throwback - a talented, stylistically accomplished, conventional example from a genre whose grandfather is ''Studs Lonigan.

Florry of Washington Heights. Part of the Katz Trilogy Series). I lived in NYC for 3 years, but never really visited Washington Heights. This is a beautiful book, full of charm and sadness. It is wonderfully evocative of the pain of teenage years, and I've read it countless times. As it happens, I grew up in the rough NE of England, but the emotions and pain described here could so easily be transposed to my home town.

William Swanson, the reluctant hero of Katz's Florry of Washington Heights, living awkwardly in the 1990s, mysteriously begins to write the stories of the obsession that came on him in the 1960s when he suddenly remembered the murder of Florry and of the injustice he witnessed years before as a child. He seeks to reconcile the past and the Washington Heights of his youth with that neighborhood today. When he anonymously delivers these stories into the hands of his former gang nemesis/hero, Jack Ryan, the latter's. ISBN 9781852421410 (978-1-85242-141-0) Softcover, Serpent's Tail, 1988. Three of the Steve Katz are women, putting them in a minority, but allowing, at least, for some female input into all of the work, which sometimes invokes misogyny, but because of the female component in its composition transcends that inference. We break down into three groups of three, each one with a woman at its pivot most of the time, though sometimes the women collaborate as a separate cadre.

If you grew up in Washington Heights like I did, you will appreciate the occassional references to long forgotten landmarks: the newsstand outside J. Hood Wright Park and the candy store on Broadway & 174th Street. The story line is thin and the writing second rate. I read this at night prior to going to sleep and it helped. There are a few geographical errors (but who cares) and it gets tedious sometimes in trying to figure out where this book is going. If you want some Heights nostalgia(the old German-Jewish Heights, not the Latino Heights,) then spend a few hours and read this.

Interesting story. My dad and his friends were Fanwoods so I had some background stories I heard as a kid. Nice writing!

The story is written well and is captures your attention, expecially so if you were born and raised in the upper Manhattan neighborhood known as Washinton Heights. Unfortunately, the author ran out of steam at the end and the story falls flat on its face with a rather amateurish close. I'd still recommend it for anyone who grew up there between 1950 and 1970

I'm English. I lived in NYC for 3 years, but never really visited Washington Heights. It doesn't matter. This is a beautiful book, full of charm and sadness. It is wonderfully evocative of the pain of teenage years, and I've read it countless times. As it happens, I grew up in the rough NE of England, but the emotions and pain described here could so easily be transposed to my home town. A masterpiece.
