Pietro Aretino, Paul Bailey (Foreword). Pietro Aretino, regarded and remembered as the originator of European pornography, explores the lives of sexually-starved women in this most scandalous of works, The Secret Life of Wives. The novel is told by Nanna to her trusted and like-minded friend Antonia. With every anecdote, decent citizens are made to blush, but then allow themselves to be lured and led further into the indecent world of female carnal passions. These stories are shocking, yet possess an underlying humor.

In this hilarious sequel to The Secret Life of Nuns, courtesan Nanna reveals to her confidante, Antonia, what really goes on in the lives of married women. A woman can only be saved from a life-threatening craving and utter damnation by a well-endowed priest; an over-devout matron releases her inner devil when she meets an attractive hermit; an insatiable wife is redressed by her husband in a most barbarous manner—these are merely some of the “truths” that Aretino exposes behind the respectable mask of marriage. And in describing the subterfuges, machinations, and diabolical ruses wives resort to—unbeknownst to their poor husbands—in order to secure the secret object of their desires, Aretino adds another titillating page to his immense catalog of human characters. Reviews about The Secret Life of Wives (Hesperus Classics) (2):
Burilar
Antonia spends the afternoon listening to stories from Nanna, whose supply of naughty gossip seems endless. One after another, Nanna spins stories of women eager beyond belief to feed their carnal appetites. One goes to prison to join the object of her passion - and, since he was there in the first place, you can guess that he wasn't what most would call worthy. Another wife prepares her husband a once-in-a-lifetime meal, the kind that no one survives to taste again, in order to join her beloved (or maybe just be-lusted). One more is willing captive of a monk who, once discovered by the prior of the order, becomes willing captive of the whole monastery. Yet another ... you get the idea.

It's a brief story, only 67 pages plus intro and end notes. Somehow that short stretch cover more far-fetched euphemisms for carnality and anatomy than I've heard in years of listening. That's part of the humor, though. More than just episodes of slapstick bed-hopping, Aretino (in Bailey's smooth translation) delivers a steady stream of amusing allusions, never repeating himself in any of them. That wit saves this book from vulgarity, making it a classic of Renaissance (1530s) adult humor.
