Richard Vine a businessman and wife-beater and unfaithful to boot has a party with twenty of his guests sharing the same name as his own. He is the owner of Beckwith Hall, once a family home now a conference center. On their way home, the party goers have a bus crash and nine of Richard’s guests are killed and two are in critical condition.

DCI David Webb and DS Ken Jackson take the case to investigate the crash and the victims. With a plethora of Richard Vine’s, it’s a daunting task. When it turns out that it may be more than a crash, the chore turns more deadly.

John Bainbridge was the driver. He worked for Hatherly Coaches, a bus service that ferries small groups here and there. He was responsible and well-liked. He had no issues or debts.

As the team sets about interviewing family members, employers and acquaintances, they know they have a monumental task ahead of them. The surviving Richard Vine families report that they know of no one who would want to do them harm. One of the hospitalized bus crash victims dies. Then another woman commits suicide…or was it? She was one of the participants at the Writers’ Conference that was given at Richard Vine’s conference center. Is this death connected somehow to the bus crash?

DCI Webb’s team is chasing dead ends and floundering badly, when suddenly a man comes in and confesses to the crime. But he was out of town at the time of the crash. He won’t leave the station, so DCI Webb has him put in a cell hoping he’ll come to his senses.

I must say that the ending of the book is a little anticlimactic in that the book comes to an end all of the sudden. As good a writer as Ms. Fraser is, I was disappointed in her method of solving the murders. But okay anyway. The book itself is very well written and plotted. It was exciting and suspenseful throughout the novel and I truly enjoyed it. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

This book has atmosphere, suspense, great descriptions and some very interesting characters. After chasing all over his "patch", DCI Webb must roam even further afield to discover the clue that solves this mystery.
