TITLE: Helliconia Spring. AUTHOR: Aldiss, Brian W. ABEB Version: . A publisher friend was trying to persuade me to produce a book I did not greatly wish to write.

TITLE: Helliconia Spring. What I had in mind was a planet much like Earth, but with a longer year. I wanted no truck with our puny 365 days. Let's say this planet is called Helliconia," I wrote, on the spur of the moment. The word was out. Helliconia! And from that word grew this book

His byline reads either Brian W. Aldiss or simply Brian Aldiss, except for occasional pseudonyms during the mid-1960s. Greatly influenced by science fiction pioneer H. G. Wells, Aldiss was a vice-president of the international H. Wells Society.

Helliconia Spring' by Brian W. Aldiss was a recent pick by my book club, chosen after the author recently died. In Helliconia Spring Aldiss attempts a lot. The planet of Helliconia is in a binary system where it orbits one sun Batalix every four hundred This book didn't really work for me. It has a very long orbital year, which has strange effects on the inhabitants of the planet.

HELLICONIA SPRING Book One of the Helliconia Trilogy 2012 marks the thirtieth anniversary of the original publication of HELLICONIA SPRING, the first volume of the Helliconia Trilogy, and E-Reads celebrates that anniversary with a brand-new re-publication of the entire trilogy, complete with map and afterward material compiled for a follow-up release of the whole series. Helliconia is a world in a very eccentric orbit about its home star which results in a very, very long "year" orbit around the central sun. After long decades of frozen winter, signs of the long-awaited thaw begin to show and an entire civilization essentially existing in suspended animation once again emerges into a world growing warmer, greener and more hospitable climatically. Old knowledge must re-emerge. Old customs begin to repeat--and old conflicts arise once again, renewed in misunderstanding, disagreement and violence. From Brian Aldiss: NASA's telescopes in 2011 detected a planet with two suns, a lesser sun and a bigger sun. Some astronomers thought this was impossible but of course it is precisely what Helliconia is all about. As yet, it seems that the planet involved is called Kepler 16B. I think they should call it Helliconia--in acknowledgement of the way in which science fiction writers can be totally perceptive about something, without necessarily making predictions. Several fans and readers wrote to me pointing to this discovery in deep space. Some of them lauded my prescience.... So here's a case where what in general was considered to be impossible has proved to be possible. This discovery surely adds depth and weight to the Helliconia Trilogy. "There's the sense, even after such a long career, that (Aldiss) may still have something astonishing left to say." -- Locus Magazine Other E-Reads titles from Brian W. Somewhere along the way, I lost my paperback copies of the Helliconia trilogy disappeared from my library. It's been 20 years or so since I last read them and I'm happy to say that the series still holds up well 30 years after it's initial release.

This is the story of Yuli as he goes from being an apprentice hunter with this father to part of the priestly ruling class of the city of Pannoval. He escapes from the city and makes it to a new land just as the eternal winter begins to fade and the snows begin to melt. This is the story of the old ways giving way to new ways as the climate changes and new civilizations form. It's the beginning of a trilogy and a satisfying story on its own.

Read this thirty years ago and was reminded of it by the long winters in Game of Thrones -Helliconia's are a lot longer -our story starts as the winter ends and life gets complicated Apparently I am as much of a geek now as I was then because I loved this story all over again-admit this time through I appreciated the depth of planetary development a bit more

I loved the beginning of the book, and the background story, but it was quite long and became tedious half way through.

Glad I read the other 2 in series first. This one is slow, couldn't stick with it. Quit third way through.

My rating is not just for this volume but for the whole trilogy. Aldiss has produced a wonderful work that will resonate with you for years to come. I first read these books long ago, and always meant to re-read them. I finished them off about a couple of months ago. It is a rich world Aldiss has created, and anyone who loves epic fantasy and science fiction in the tradition of Dune, will love these books. They are true classics. They are not filled with wall to wall battle scenes, but are rather a baroque tapestry of character, setting, and situations. The one great sadness that will come over you as you turn the final page is that Aldiss never attempted another grand epic on the scale.
