The Final Nexus book. All of the characters were much better drawn by DeWeese.

The Final Nexus book. Part of the suspense is of the, "How will the Enterprise get out of this situation?" ilk, but fortunately, DeWeese keeps the characters at the forefront of the story. The Final Nexus (1988) qualifies as meaty Trek for the reader to sink his or her teeth - and imagination - into.

Look for STAR TREK fiction from Pocket Books. Like Commander Ansfield did when she popped. Any subspace activity, Lieutenant Grayson?" Moving to look over the helmsman's shoulder, Chandler studied the controls a moment.

This book, on the other hand, would make significantly less sense if one had not previously read "Chain of Attack". Less, but not none; it is possible to read this book without that one, and simply to assume that the backstory is one that hasn't been told.

Great story line
Goldcrusher
I thoroughly enjoyed this read which is a follow up to a previous story CHAIN OF ATTACK by the same author.
Daiktilar
Good Star Trek the Original Series story.

The first book, "chain of attack" imho, was way, way better, and have read several times over the years have always enjoyed it, except for the "Crandell" parts. This book however, was eh, like the original series episodes that made no sense and was short lived in action, like almost no action. I will say the middle of the book just started to peak my interest, but was pretty much downhill from there. I will not read it ever again nor I will not be keeping this book.

"Chain of Attack" stands well on its own, and it is not necessary to read this book to "complete" the story told there. This book, on the other hand, would make significantly less sense if one had not previously read "Chain of Attack". Less, but not none; it is possible to read this book without that one, and simply to assume that the backstory is one that hasn't been told. This story can, in fact, stand on its own.
Which is good, because it's an extremely good story; the regular characters are handled well, a couple of new characters that are added for spice are interesting and worthwhile, and the story itself is a fast-moving, well-paced story that is very well written. It's one of the best "Enterprise saves the universe as we know it" stories that I've ever read; it actually manages to be almost plausible.

It is a sequel to #32, Chain of Attack. But you don't really have to read that one. I read both when they came out, and loved them then... I think they stand the test of time quite well.

I think this was one of the very best of the TOS books. But it is certainly not for everyone. Perfect for me, because it speaks to exactly what I like: great intrigue, fast moving, and a lot of discoveries/answers about past technology and races that were mysteriously lost. This book does NOT follow the latest style of writing, there is a lot of info-dumping... but I love that. Most importantly, if you are looking for a drama or a character story, I do not recommend. This book is one heck of a ripping yarn, full of tension, full of thought-provoking ideas, but its not a deep look into character relationships. Quick read - took me a day, so if you are up for a bit of fun, I highly recommend.

Sequels in the Star Trek universe have become more popular since the success of the movies.
Thus, this novel was written as a sequel to the moderately successful Chain of Attack (#32).
If you liked Chain of Attack, then read this one.
This book is a paperback, and is published by pocket books. It is written by Gene DeWeese, my copy says Dec 1988, once again I dont know if this is a first printing. It is also the sequel of Chain Of Attack.
