This Flip-Mat is probably the best investment you can make for your game. It beats Chessex's BattleMat in every way! I own both products, and keep coming back to the Flip-Mat, I'm about to buy my third! Here's why:

Size:
The Flip-Mat is 24"X30" when completely unfolded, this is compared to the BattleMat's 26"X23". If you need a bigger mat, then you can simply buy two Flip-Mats and combine them. This is still cheaper and more flexible than Chessex's solution, which buying Chessex's MegaMat, which is about $36 (you can buy three Flip-Mat's and have the flexibility of separating them for smaller games for that much!).

Price:
Here's where the Flip-Mat shines the brightest. the Flip-Mat has square grids on BOTH sides. The BattleMat has hexagons on one side and squares on another. If you're playing with 1" square grids then you cannot go wrong with the Flip-Mat. Did I mention that the BattleMat is more then DOUBLE the price of the Flip-Mat?! That's like getting four BattleMat's for the price of one!

Staying Flat:
I've heard complaints that this mat doesn't stay completely flat when pulled out of packaging. While true, this applies to both the BattleMat and the Flip-Mat. They both have the same problem/solution as well, flatten them with books and weights for a day. After flattening the Flip-Mat it remains very flat. Not as flat as the BattleMat, but flat enough to where it can function flawlessly when you put mini's on it or try to draw on it. Also, when you finish using the BattleMat and roll it up, you have to flatten it or it will curl up a bit. The same can be said with the Flip-Mat when you fold it though.

Versatility:
The Flip-Mat can handle all types of markers while the BattleMat will stain. Also if you use the wet-erase markers that BattleMats require and don't wash them off within a week, it will stain the mat! So if you like to prep maps before gaming sessions and don't happen to have enough time to use the map, then be prepared to redraw the map!

If you're looking for a reusable mat, then look no further. This is the mat you want!

I'd rate t a 4.5 if I could. This thing is huge, has a front and back (one side gray (stone), the other brown (dirt)). Making maps has never been so easy. I used to use a dry erase board and had to make the 1" squares, now I just have to make the map. Thankfully, because of the 2 sides I can have 2 maps prepared before a game.

The reason for the 1 less star is that it's not as "hard" as I thought it would be. It does fold up which is nice for packing, but when you unfold it, it doesn't stay completely flat easily. Luckily, you just have to put a couple books on the edges and it stays flat enough so the figures don't fall.
I use it for D&D and now I can't go back to my old dry erase board (oh, it's easy to clean off too). I'm certain that I'll end up buying one or two more boards from this seller (they have caves, boats, and keep maps already made).

They are stylish, functional, and economical mats. That's the really good news. You want a mat with less hassle than Chessex's and fair enough durability? This is a good pick. Wipe on. Wipe off. Looking good doing it. No complaints, a laminated solution.

My only dig is that the size is disappointing. I got (what I imagine is) their largest size and it's something like 30x24. Not bad. Just not big enough. My Chessex mat is harder to work with (wet erase is crap, honestly), but at least I can get a good spread going. But, if the size is right for you? Go for it. Great product.

I originally thought that this was a vinyl mat. Shame on me for not reading the description well enough. It was probably the excitement for finding something bigger than the Chessex ones for cheaper that made me almost buy it on the spot. Probably wouldn't have bought it if I had read that it was just card stock. That being said, now that I have it, it does work pretty decent. The fact that you can use any of the three main types of markers is convenient and the size is great. The only other con I can see with this is that the creases are sometimes hard to get down. Weighing it down for an extended period of time works but unless you store it like that, you have to reflatten them every time, unlike the Chessex battlemat which you can just roll up. Worth the price. If you're just starting out DMing and don't want to break the bank I would recommend it, otherwise I would say it's worth paying double for it's Chessex counterpart.

What's good: The material. These mats are made of cardstock paper, much like a postcard or greeting card, which, with the plastic surface makes them virtually immune to accidental tearing. They are also very large, perfect for a dungeon, town or valley.

What's less-than-perfect: They ship folded, not rolled, so they have creases which will eventually wear out. The plastic laminate does not extend beyond the edge of the paper, so drink spills can still cause minor damage to the edges.

My local store only ever carries the (lame) double-patterned boards. You know the ones- docks on one side, dungeon on the other or some such. For the last 10 years or so, I've had one of these that was docks on one side/blank on the other. The thing lasted past TWO vinyl mats.

These are simply great; I've got a brand new one in reserve for that time in like 2025 when both sides of this current one are used up.

We actually were using (before I bought this) the box of tiles that you can buy. We started getting bored of them and as a DM I was getting annoyed because if I wanted to particular tile set I'd have to go shell out 30-50 bucks. So we went old school and I invested in this mat and some washable markers. Everyone prefers this, over that anytime we play. I think you would too, so I would recommend this to anyone whose into table top gaming.
Good for Minotaurs and Mazes and other alliterative roleplaying games. Not crap. Two colors are nice for "Dungeons" and "Outdoors" primarily.
