Garrett is best known for the Lord Darcy books - the novel Too Many Magicians and two short story collections - set in an alternate world where a joint Anglo-French empire still led by a Plantagenet dynasty has survived into the twentieth century and where magic works and has been scientifically codified. The Darcy books are rich in jokes, puns, and references (particularly to works of detective and spy fiction: Lord Darcy is himself partially modelled on Sherlock Holmes), elements that often appear in the shorter works about the detective. Randall Garrett was a prolific American science fiction and fantasy author, contributing dozens of stories to Astounding and other genre magazines in the 1950s and 1960s and acting as a mentor to a young Robert Silverberg. He is best known for his genre-bending Lord Darcy series, fair-play mysteries set in an alternate version of our world where the Plantagenet dynasty never fell and the laws of magic developed in place of the laws of physics.

These are fun mystery stories. The unique element is the treatment of magic: magicians have to have an innate "talent". The study of magic has been conducted scientifically over several centuries. It has laws, application of the laws to limit what can and can't be done, and its own mathematics. The mysteries are solved by Lord Darcy, who does not have the talent. His assistant is a master magician who can't just determine the miscreant by magic, but who provides assistance rather like sending samples off to the laboratory. See also: Too Many Magicians.

Really a good book! Lord Darcy investigates crimes in an alternate universe, one in which France and Great Britain never separated. Magic and sorcery are integral parts of his forensic investigations. Darcy is a mix of Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot, and any number of other detectives. Very well written, enjoyable stories.

The Plantagenets still rule England (and France), magic is studied as a science, and electricity has never been discovered. Now, go solve a murder. These stories are wonderful examples of how this sub-genre of SF works, and well-written as well. Worth the money, particularly if you have not read Garrett before.

I just wish Randall Garrett lived longer to write more of these books. This is set in an alternate universe where magic is science and Darcy is similar to Sherlock Holmes but with a magician, Sean, at his side instead of Watson. This should be required reading in school to encourage reading.

Randall Garrett is a favorite SF short story writer. The Lord Darcy mysteries are a fun read. Not overly violent, but enough plot to keep interest in a world where wizards are CSI specialists and the aristocracy (politicians) work for the good of the people. Too bad he didn't write more.

For my money this was the best of the D'Arcy books which is why I bought it for my Kindle even though I already owned the book.

Fantastic alternate history in a mystery format.
I read these stories when they were first published many years ago and am happy to reconnect with them
