Reviews about Changelings (7):
FEISKO
This last PTB trilogy reads as if it were a poorly-written fan fiction, by someone who was only told about the first trilogy. There are plot holes you could drive a tank through; few, if any, of the returning characters (of which there are very few) act as they did in the first trilogy (Marmion has developed a French accent, which makes no sense); there are several deus ex machina moments in each book; the characters, dialogue, and descriptions have none of the charm and development found in the first trilogy. The twins, for example, are the most undeveloped, cardboard cut-outs of main characters I have ever run into. How did these books get past an editor?

Only buy these books if you absolutely MUST know what happened to the twins who were born at the end of the third book of the first PTB trilogy. If you want to get a good McCaffrey book, start with the earlier Pern books; I recommend the Menolly books highly.

I've read all of McCaffeys Dragons of Pern books and enjoyed every one. This is the first in a new series, about a sentient planet terraforming itself and se!ecting the people it wants to live there. Twin brother and sister with the ability to shape change into seals and communicate with each other are born. If you enjoy books with interesting characters, lively action and no violence, sex or explicit language, one you can read to your kids, grab this one and enjoy.

I had very much enjoyed the first three books and was pleased to see another come out. It began strong, but didn't stay that way. I really liked the beginning, with the culture and focus on Petaybee. Then it got to the twin's disregard for rules or their own safety, and I really didn't like that very much. It seemed to me as if the twins' disobedient recklessness was treated with approval--they're strong-minded, and all that, of course, isn't that great--and it was obviously used as the reason to get them off-planet so the rest of the story could commence. I found that somewhat forced. I also found their antics more appalling than endearing. A little forceful discipline would have been more realistic of any parents I know!

And there seemed to be some problems with editing that I hope will be rectified at some point. I haven't read the paperback version, but let's get the cats' genders straight, please.

I am hoping the next book is better. I see it has been released, and yes, I will buy it and see how it goes.

This takes up where the last powers that be book leaves off. It is a typical AM book in that it is a book about people in a sifi/fantasy setting. I have most of AM's books and re-read them about every 5 years (it takes almost that long to get through all of them). This is the first time I have read this book. I liked it. Book 2 was also great; but I thought book 3 was a little overwhelming in the extent of the problems.

I'm a sucker for books by Anne McCaffrey ever since I read the Pern series. I enjoyed Changelings however it's not up to the quality I enjoyed in the early Pern books. The characters are a little too "plastic". Not enough character development for me to really get to know them. They seem to be just caricatures. And the story line was just a little too predictable. Of course the evil Dr. Mabo would wind up encountering the children. And of course, Sean was conveniently unavailable to warn them. And of course, the rescue arrives just in the nick of time. Ah well, I'll probably read the rest of the series anyways but I really do miss the quality of those early Pern books.
Уou ll never walk alone
My twin stepsons have the telepathy communication. I even know when one of them is needing to talk, but not the other. They are alike, yet different in that respect.
I would certainly want to be able to change into a 4 legged creature at times and experience new things. Maybe that's the child tucked away in this 54 year old woman.Who cares what age group a book is geared toward, if it's a good story. I hope my grandsons will enjoy some of the Kindle Books I download. They've read everything else in my house. I might have to buy them their own Kindles, I'm not wanting to share mine outside of this house.

love it
Anne M is my all time favorite author. I started with her Pern books and moved on. Pern, Petaybee, Domia and her kids and The Ship Who Sang, they will all transport you, and the world and character building...ok I could go on and on just read them for yourself. LOVE LOVE LOVE.
