Ms Lisle has paid close attention to consistency, and unlike many worlds built by amateur fantasy writers, this one has an internal logic that ramifies throughout the story.

Reviews about Memory of Fire (The World Gates, Book 1) (7):

I have loved every book I've read that Holly Lisle has written. Scifi, suspense, fantasy, tongue-in-cheek, she does them all well. Memory of Fire is the first in her World Gates fantasy series. Publisher problems prevented the next ones from being published, but hopefully that will not be true much longer. A young widow discovers her heritage almost by accident when she moves back to her family home after the death of her husband. She unintentionally causes trouble for the ring of Sentinels who have kept the world she grew up in safe from interaction with another world she had been made to forget. A conspiracy of those who covet power over both worlds threatens to destroy both. I look forward to the hoped-for publication of more books in this World Gates series.

I read all three of the World Gates books in quick succession shortly after the third volume was published -- and I liked them so much that, when I finished the third book, I immediately went back to the first book and read them all again. They are compelling, consistent, well-structured, well-paced, contain believable and well-developed characters, and generally just rock.

"Memory of Fire" sets up the overall structure of the World Gates milieu (power flows "downward" through the chain of universes, and consequences flow "upward") and the central characters of the drama (Lauren Dane and Molly McColl). And it's very good - but it's only the prelude. The two succeeding books ("The Wreck of Heaven" and "Old Gods and Dark") take the reader on a far deeper and darker journey than "Memory of Fire" would imply; a journey that is merely hinted at throughout this first book. Even without that deeper story to follow, "Memory of Fire" would be a good novel. Ms Lisle has paid close attention to consistency, and unlike many worlds built by amateur fantasy writers, this one has an internal logic that ramifies throughout the story. However, I recommend "Memory of Fire" in the context of the entire "World Gates" trilogy, which collectively constitutes a top-tier epic fantasy, as well as a parable about both individual and collective moral responsibility.

Memory of Fire is nothing short of a masterful saga. For those who love cross-dimensional fantasy, Lisle's work can be wonderfully satisfying and does successfully allow one to experience a thorough suspension of disbelief.
Since I do live in the heart of one of the story's settings, I read with interest the many references to the Laurinburg, Gibson, and Rockingham areas of south central North Carolina. Having met the author's parents while they resided in Laurinburg, I began reading Holly Lisle as a way to scratch a curiosity itch. I found a tremendous treasure within the works of Holly Lisle. And, like fine wine, this particular author seems to greatly improve with age.
Memory of Fire is the story of two women: Lauren Dane and Molly McColl. Both become enmeshed within the tangled web first spun by parents that neither woman really knew. Part of that webbing includes another world; one on which humans can create and produce magic. Unfortunately, each spell carries a sinister equation: for every spell cast there is an equal and opposing effect on Earth. Each woman learns that old Spiderman axiom-with great power comes great responsibility. Quite frankly, to reveal more would be criminal, for the book's charm lies within its plot's twists and turns.
As Lisle breathes life into wonderful characters and plot, Memory of Fire becomes a procrastinator's worst nightmare-it simply is NOT a book to be put down until every page is turned. Fortunately, Memory of Fire is the first installment of a larger work called The World Gates; there will be more to come.
Books that I plan to read repeatedly are usually bought in the hardback format; however, Memory of Fire is available only in paperback. I find that to be the book's only major flaw.

Great opening to a cool universe. Pretty classic parallel universe with lots of nice twists. Strong females! Yeah. Be happy that they are all out so you don't have to wait read them all like I did! I can't find my paperbacks, so now I can have it on ebook! Holly Lisle writes books you can't put down. This is no exception.

This was original and thoroughly enjoyable. I thought all the characters were good but Molly was especially enjoyable. Wanting to hear more of her story.

Good characters, great setting, and a story that really hustles along to an interesting conclusion. Looking forward to the next story.
Couldn't read it. The writing was so bad that it was distracting.
